SATURDAY WINE TASTING: AUGUST 21, 2010

Posted by Admin on Aug 21, 2010 - 01:53 PM

TO CAP OFF THE BIG SPANISH AND SOUTH AMERICA WINE SALE WE ARE GOING TO HOLD A SPECIAL SATURDAY WINE TASTING AUGUST 21 FROM 1- 4 PM WITH OUR GOOD FRIEND KRISTI DELOVITCH FROM COUNTRY VINTNER. KRISTI WILL SOME GREAT WINES FROM A FEW OF THE LEADING WINE PRODUCERS IN SPAIN.

BODEGAS BORGA

Although the history of the city of Borja takes us back to the beginnings of the Paleolithic period, it wasn’t until the 4th century before Christ, in the heart of the Celtiberian period, when thanks to classical and numismatic written sources the name of this village came to light: Bursao.

With the passing through Bursao of different civilizations like the Romans, Visigothic Hispania and the Muslims we have inherited architectural remains and above all, the natural inclination of its people towards agriculture and more particularly viniculture.

Of equal importance was the implementation of artisanal techniques that today endure as living proof of the cultural richness of the former Bursao today known as Borja.

During the I and II centuries, before our time, it used to mint bronze coins, ases and dividers as a symbol of its autonomy. On the obverse we can see a celtiberian rider armed with a lance, riding on the writing of the name of the city in the native alphabet. The emblem adopted by the winery as a sign of identity.

Our origins go back to 1958, the year the Cooperative of Borja was founded, which has through years been the forerunner of the mythical brand Borsao.

In the year 2001, Borsao went on to obtain its own legal status with the creation of the company Bodegas Borsao S.A., comprising of the cooperatives of Borja, Pozuelo and Tabuenca, thereby joining efforts, resources and means, that combined with the experience and potential of the vineyards of the 3 wine cellars has enabled the development of a new work philosophy that has gainedinternational recognition and prestige.

BORSAO TRES PICOS 2008
The Wine Advocate 91 points: "The flagship of this portfolio is the perennially outstanding Tres Picos. The 2008 Tres Picos is 100% Garnacha old vines in which 50% was aged in tank and 50% in French oak for 10 months. It gives up a compelling nose of black cherry fruit that jumps from the glass along with earth and mineral notes. Plush on the palate bordering on voluptuous, this pleasurebent, full-flavored effort will drink well for another 3-4 years although few will be able to resist its charms for that long."

Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar 91 points: "Opaque purple. Exotically perfumed bouquet of dark berry preserves, smoky minerals, potpourri and Indian spices, with a strong note of cracked pepper; smells like a high-end northern Rhone wine. Very spicy and tightly focused, offering juicy red and dark berry flavors and sexy notes of candied flowers and cocoa powder. Finishes with a wallop of sweet red berries and lingering, seductive spiciness; as ridiculous a value as one can find these days. The yield for this wine was reportedly under two tons per acre."

Winery Notes: “Deep and sweet, Tres Picos Borsao is cherry red in color with a hint of purple tones. In the nose, there is a boundless bouquet of mature red fruits with traces of flowers that are typical of the best Garnachas. In the mouth, it is rich and well-structured simultaneously conveying flavors of blackberries, strawberries and tones of leather, vanilla and plums. Perfectly combined with a sweet and pleasant tannin, Tres Picos Borsao leaves us with a long, silky and balanced finish.”
Reg. $21.99  . . . PEARSON’S SALE PRICE . . . $14.99

BODEGAS ALTO MONCAYO
Bodegas Alto Moncayo is located in the Campo de Borja region of Spain. The vineyard sits atop very unique soils of red clay mixed with red slate. Because of its hillside location the soils are very poor in organic matter and shallow. A few sites have calcareous soils.

Campo de Borja region of Spain is known for its powerful and complex Garnacha based wines, the fruit for this limited production 100% old vine Garnacha is carefully hand chosen from among the bodegas 40-80 year old vines and aged 20 months in new oak. As Jose Miguel San Martin, Bodegas Alto Moncayos sole admistrator says, “it is like tasting the authentic essence of Garnacha.”

The Wine Advocate 94 points: "The purple-colored 2007 Alto Moncayo was aged in new French and American oak for 17 months before bottling without filtration. It offers up a sexy concoction of toasty new oak, lavender, spice box, cassis, and black raspberry. Round, rich, and voluptuous on the palate, it delivers plenty of up-front pleasure but hides enough ripe tannin to evolve for a few years. It can be enjoyed now and over the next decade.”

Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar 93 points: "Deep ruby with a bright rim. Impressively complex, seductive bouquet of dark berry preserves, tobacco, graphite and smoky Indian spices. Pliant black raspberry and candied cherry flavors are enlivened by zesty minerals and firmed by fine-grained tannins. An exotic floral pastille quality emerges with air and carries into the finish, which is strikingly sweet, lively and persistent. I can't believe that this wine bears the touch of the same guy who is partially responsible for inflicting Australia's R wines on us."

Wine Spectator 92 points: "This plush, dense red shows coffee and spicy oak, with berry and wild plum fruit and accents of licorice and black pepper. The tannins are firm but well-integrated, and this finishes warm and spicy. Modern and alluring. Drink now through 2012. 600 cases made."
Reg. $55.99 . . . PEARSON’S SALE PRICE . . . $39.89

BODEGAS MUGA
If you know anything about Spanish wines then you know about Bodegas Muga  a perennial 90 point favorite of all the wine critics their wines definitely back up the ratings.

The Muga wine cellars were founded in 1932 by Isaac Muga Martínez who originated from a family with strong ties to the winemaking industry. On the death of the founder in 1969, his children Manuel, Isabel and Isaac Muga Caño took over the reins.

Two years later in 1971, they moved their headquarters to their present location in the traditional Station District on the outskirts of Haro. Bodegas Muga has continued to grow as the years have passed but it has never lost the spirit or aptitude of a family-run company.

The winery controls every step of the viticultural and vinification process from the vineyards to making their own barrels and fermenting and aging the wine entirely in oak. Muga is one of only six estates in the world that owns its own cooperage and they import the oak directly from the United States and France. Bodegas Muga is one of the oldest, most elegant and traditional Rioja producers.

Bodegas Muga vineyards are located on the foot of the Montes Obarenses, within the area called Rioja Alta. The site climate is exceptional due to, on the one hand, the singular geography and orientation of the vines and on the other hand, the surrounding climates –Mediterranian, Atlantic and Continental climates are combined harmoniously thus creating a suitable climatic site for growing grape.

The soil in this area is mostly clay and limestone, divided in small terroirs with different physical and chemical qualities between them; thus each terroir has a unique and defined personality. This abundance of climatic influences and different soils define prolonged stages in the vine growth cycle. The growth will be complex and delicate, key to the potential quality of the wines in this area

Bodegas Muga owns 620 acres of vineyards but it also has control over 370 acres owned by vine growers in the area. The grape varieties grown are Tempranillo (the essence), Garnacha (Grenache), Mazuelo (Carignan) and Graciano for the red wines; and Viura and Malvasia are used for the white wines.

MUGA ROSE RIOJA 2009
Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar 90 points: “Vivid pink. Complex, highly aromatic bouquet of pink grapefruit, strawberry, rhubarb and white flowers, with a strong mineral undertone. Bright, racy red berry flavors are given a tangy edge by citrus zest and white pepper, with the mineral quality adding lift and cut. Finishes suave, spicy and long, with excellent thrust.”
Reg. $13.99 . . . PEARSON’S SALE PRICE . . . $9.79

MUGA BLANCO RIOJA 2009
Winery Notes: “Aromas which tell us that it has spent a little time in the oak, cloaking it with a veneer of vanilla. A very bright, clear white wine which is packed with aromas of citrus and white-fleshed fruit, pears and their hearts. With freshness, a freshness which lingers on the palate, with these citrus nuances which are alive, with this passion which is expressed in all its elements. A magical, really fruity white.”
Reg. $18.99 . . . PEARSON’S SALE PRICE . . . $13.29

MUGA RESERVA RIOJA 2006
The Wine Advocate 91 points: “Muga’s red wines begin with the 2006 Muga Reserva, a blend of 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha, with the balance Mazuelo and Graciano. It was aged for 6 months in wooden vats before spending 2 years in 60% new French and American oak. Purple-colored with an already complex bouquet of pain grille, mineral, violets, black cherry, and blackberry, on the palate it is smooth-textured, layered, and concentrated. It conceals enough structure to evolve for 1-2 years and will offer optimal drinking from 2012 to 2026. It is an excellent value in serious Rioja.”

Winery Notes: “Powerful, intense and very lively, anxious to please from the start. Almost perfect mingling of red-berry fruit and toasted oak aromas on the nose, with the fruit coming to the fore in the mouth and rounding off a supple, balanced overall effect.”
Reg. $29.99 . . . PEARSON’S SALE PRICE . . . $20.99

SATURDAY WINE TASTING - AUGUST 14TH

Posted by Admin on Aug 14, 2010 - 02:53 PM

TODAY SATURDAY AUGUST 14 FROM 1-5 PM. WE WILL HAVE OUR GOOD FRIEND ROBERT PERTI WITH US FROM MONSIEUR TOUTON AND WE WILL BE HOLDING A WONDERFUL WHITE BORDEAUX TASTING. SO STOP ON BY AS THIS WILL BE A TASTING YOU WILL NOT WANT TO MISS.

BORDEAUX

Bordeaux is renowned throughout the world for its red wines—it also make some spectacularly good dry white wines that tend to get overlooked and are normally priced at well below what they should be.

In recent years, its dry white wines have been increasingly gaining praise from the critics. The wines can be refreshing dominated by Sauvignon Blanc and/or Semillon, or full-bodied, barrel-aged, and ageworthy single varietals or blend of two or more grape varieties.

Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon make up most dry white Bordeaux. Muscadelle and Sauvignon Gris are two less important varieties that are less likely seen, but may be added to the blend.

Sauvignon Blanc: This grape - often better known from such wine regions as Sancerre in France's Loire Valley and Marlborough in New Zealand - is also planted in Bordeaux. It is a very versatile grape that can produce light, racy, more structured and complex oak-aged versions. Sauvignon Blanc is often criticized as being simple and unable to age, however, some excellent ageworthy examples are crafted.

Semillon: This is the most planted white grape in the Bordeaux region. Some rich, full-bodied dry wines with tropical fruit and honey aromas are also made with Semillon. Semillon is often blended with the leaner, more acidic Sauvignon Blanc to balance its plumpness.

Muscadelle: Similar to the Muscat grape, although not directly related, Muscadelle has a perfumed aroma that has many admirers. Very rarely is this grape made into a single varietal wine and almost never makes up more than 15% of any vineyard. Muscadelle is a difficult grape to grow so many growers won't bother with it. It is sometimes seen as a minor component in dry and sweet white blends.

Sauvignon Gris: This offshoot of the Sauvignon Blanc grape has developed a following in the Graves region of Bordeaux. Sauvignon Gris has a pinkish-coloured skin and instead of the citrus and grassy aromas and flavours of Sauvignon Blanc, it has a rounder, more floral character

Principal Dry White Bordeaux Appellations

Bordeaux AOP: Many of the dry white wines of Bordeaux are classified simply as Bordeaux AOC (changed recently to AOP). In fact, 60% of all dry white wine produced in Bordeaux uses this appellation. Many styles of dry whites are classified with this appellation, from fresh, crisp, and fruity wines for early consumption to more full-bodied, barrel-aged examples.

Entre-Deux-Mers AOP: After Bordeaux AOP, this is the largest dry white wine appellation in Bordeaux. Wines sold as Entre-Deux-Mers must be dry whites and are mainly made with Sauvignon Blanc together with Semillon and Muscadelle. Most of these wines are light and easy-drinking and should be consumed as young as possible

Graves AOP: Graves is Bordeaux's only region that is famous for both its red and white wines. It is in this region that more serious, barrel-aged, sometimes barrel fermented dry whites can be found. Most are a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon.

Pessac-Leognan AOP: The best white Bordeaux comes from the inner Graves appellation—Pessac-Léognan. This appellation is also for both red and white wines and was established in 1987 for what is considered to be the best vineyards of the larger Graves region. It is still often referred to as Graves. The white wines from this region can be included among the most complex white wines in the world. Sauvignon Blanc must make up at least 25% of the blend usually with Semillon. These wines will, for the most part, be barrel-fermented and barrel-aged, and some of the best can be successfully cellared for decades.

CHATEAU PEYRON GRAVES 2009
A TRUE VALUE AND SMART BUY
Winery Notes: “Explosively aromatic Sauvignon Blanc is given richness and depth with citrus-soaked Semillon, in this exquisite, minerally-fresh gem. Very crisp with waves of rich apricot, toasty oak and crisp, tangy well rounded finish.  A perfect food wine with terrific value.”
Reg. $14.99 . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE . . . $9.99

CHATEAU DE LA JAUBERTIE BERGERAC 2009
Château de la Jaubertie, is a rising star.
Bergerac is technically not located in Bordeaux. Located just outside of Bordeaux it has a similar “terrior” as Bordeaux hence they grow and use much the same grape varieties.

Winery Notes: “The Tradition White cuvée is a blend of 60%  sauvignon blanc, 35% sémillon and 5% muscadelle.  20% is barrel fermented. The vines are on a plateau or slopes with clay limestone soil. The density of plantation is 2.800 vines per hectare which favours vigour; canopy growth and shading which gives the characters of this wine. The grapes are mechanically harvested during the night to avoid oxidation, then chilled and macerated during 24 hours. Once pressed and filtered, the juice is long fermented then left on lees to increase flavour and palate richness. 18% is vinified in older wooden barrels, in order to obtain more complexity and better lees contact. Pale yellow green, pungent: herbaceous exotic fruit, yellow fruit, blackcurrant tip, well balanced steely, long flavour. Excellent in the aromatical style.”
Reg. $16.99 . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE . . . $11.99

CHATEAU LAFONT MENAUT PESSAC- LEOGNAN 2009
Made by Philibert Perrin of Château Carbonnieux 'is from Pessac-Léognan in Graves, close by the great and famous Haut-Brion. This is an excellent example of what really good, modern well-made white Graves is all about.

Winery Notes: “Its gorgeous lemon, flowers and liquorice, very soft and silky. And unlike many white wines, it will continue to improve, becoming more intense over the years.', this 100% Sauvignon Blanc is very subdued, giving up its nutty, aromas very slowly. The palate has a huge core of mineral, almost liquoricy character and whilst the acidity is crisp, the overall appeal is savoury and lean. Pale, clear colour with a trace of green. Excellent fruit and richness, a hint of lemon. Good acidity. Perfect with shellfish, fish and all spicy foods.”
Reg. $22.99 . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE . . . $17.24

CHATEAU COUHINS PESSAC- LEOGNAN 2006
Château Couhins is a Bordeaux wine from the Pessac-Léognan appellation, ranked among the Premiers Crus for dry white wine in the Classification of Graves. Owned by the Lurton Family.

Winery Notes: “A rather grassy nose here, mineral and slightly earthy, this certainly has some depth and character. The palate has a full style, and is in fact rather fat; underneath there is gentle acidity but an evident structure.”

Reg. $39.99 . . . PEARSON’S SALE PRICE . . . $27.99

CHATEAU CARBONNIEUX PESSAC- LEOGNAN 2007
The Wine Advocate 90- 92 points: “Château Carbonnieux is among the elite of Pessac-Leognan. A vibrant nose, with cream and ripe capsicum fruit. A nice, weighty style on the palate, fleshy, with an appealing warm substance. Good grip to it, fresh flavor and a very attractive density.”
Reg. $58.99 . . . PEARSON’S SALE PRICE . . . $42.99

Today we will have a special Wine Tasting and Sale on Domaine Bellevue Touraine.

Come on by and beat the heat and enjoy some fine wines from Touraine in the Loire Valley. As these wines have been featured in the Washington Post as “Recession Buster Wines”.

DOMAINE BELLEVUE

Domaine Bellevue is a family-owned estate growing vines and making wines for four generations. Situated on the slopes of the right shore of the Cher Valley, the vineyard is settled on a light siliceous stony ground and clayey-limestone subsoil. Patrick Vauvy took over the family Domaine in 1991 which today has 18 hectares of vineyards planted with several Loire varietals. Touraine is a large wine area, at the centre of the Loire Valley producing different kinds of wine. It is also the place where you can find most of the famous Châteaux de la Loire. The fruit in the vineyards of Mr. Vauvy are ideally situated for the creation of appealing and aromatic wines of great finesse.

For the past 5 years, Domaine Bellevue has conducted a survey of the grounds of the estate in order to find the best expression of each grape variety depending on Terroir. In 2003, the estate was certified by Terras-Vitis.

DOMAINE BELLEVUE ROSE TOURAINE 2009
Winery Notes: “A structured Rosé featuring a spicy bouquet with hints of strawberries and melon. On the palate it is dry rich and pleasantly peppery with a well balanced acidity giving way to a smooth finish.”

DOMAINE BELLEVUE SAUVIGNON BLANC TOURAINE 2009

SATURDAY ONE DAY SALE: CHATEAU LAFITE-ROTHSCHILD & DASSAULT= 94 & 92 PT MALBEC MASTERPIECES

Posted by Admin on Jul 24, 2010 - 06:41 PM

You will not be disappointed with the caliber and quality of these Malbec wines. As they are made from two people Rothschild & Dassault who need no introduction in wine making. But you will be surprised at the price for these 94 and 92 point wines.

BODEGA FLECHAS DE LOS ANDES

Bodega Flechas de Los Andes is a result of the partnership between Baron Benjamin de Rothchild (Chateau Lafite-Rothschild) and Mr. Laurent Dassault (Owner, Grand Cru Chateau Dassault, Saint Emilion), on a unique terroir situated at the foot of the Andes cordillera, to the south of Mendoza. The Malbec grape variety reigns in this alluvial terroir of the Andes. The finest plots of the Flechas de Los Andes vineyards have been selected to offer you a wine that is the expression of a pure, top of the range Argentinean Malbec. The Duillet designed winery, immaculate in its attention to detail, has a capacity of 900,000 liters and is currently operating at about 30% of its total capacity. At the moment, the winery plans to make only two wines.

ROTHSCHILD FLECHAS DE LOS ANDES GRAN MALBEC 2007
The winemaking is essentially the same as with great Bordeaux; slow temperature controlled maceration and then aging in new and one year old French oak barrels. It's called Gran Malbec because it truly is a Grand wine, bigger and more robust than many other producers’ Reserve wines.

Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate 92 points: “Flechas de Los Andes’ 2007 Gran Malbec spent 14 months in 33% new French oak, 33% second fill French oak, and 34% in stainless steel. Opaque purple-colored, it reveals a brooding bouquet of cedar, espresso, violets, and black cherry. Medium- to full-bodied, on the palate it borders on opulence, with layers of succulent fruit, a smooth texture, spicy flavors, and a lengthy finish. It admirably combines power and elegance. It also over delivers in a very big way.”

SATURDAY ONE DAY SALE PRICE . . . $16.99

ROTHSCHILD FLECHAS DE LOS ANDES GRAN CORTE MALBEC 2006

Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate 94 points: “Flechas de Los Andes’ 2006 Gran Corte spent 17 months in new French oak. It is opaque purple-colored with legs that ooze down the glass. The aromatics are brooding but expressive with notes of pain grille, pencil lead, spice box, lavender, black cherry, and plum. Opulent, with glossy fruit, this dense, rich effort conceals significant underlying structure. This intense, powerful, lengthy wine demands a minimum of 5-7 years of cellaring and will be at its best from 2015 to 2030.”

Michael's discoveries . . . almost never enough wine to put into an email . . . but always enough for a small taste and a few bottles . . . to satisfy a few of you . . . who know the secret words . . .

"Hey, Michael, what's in your stash today?"

Michael has some wine gems today that he has stashed away just for the Fourth of July Weekend.

MARTIN RAY WINERY

IN THE HEART OF RUSSIAN RIVER VALLEY

HISTORIC LANDMARK, LEGENDARY WINES

Martin Ray Winery started in Saratoga California in the WW2 era. Martin Ray was a viticulture student of Paul Masson. This location was established in 1881 as the Twin Fir Winery. This historic site is distinguished as the oldest winery in continuous operation in Sonoma County and one of the oldest wineries in California. Some of the old grape crush barns from the original days still exist.

In 1990, Courtney Benham was walking through an old warehouse in San Jose when he chanced upon a forgotten treasure -- some 1,500 cases of library wines, dating back more than forty years, made by California wine pioneer Martin Ray. Courtney explored further and found several old wooden crates filled with letters, press clippings, winery brochures and price lists from Ray's four decades as a winemaker. It was clear that Martin Ray had quite a history, so Courtney contacted the Ray family and acquired the wine library and rights to the Martin Ray label. He decided to take up the Martin Ray brand with the goal of creating wines whose quality would make Martin Ray himself proud. This was no small task, for Ray was an iconoclast who rejected mediocrity and an innovator who was one of the first to use grapes from the Santa Cruz Mountains to create premium wines.

Traditional winemaking in the Burgundy region of France emphasizes hands-on techniques that create conditions in which a wine's essence can unfold naturally. Martin Ray wines are based on this time-honored approach. This technique depends on the winemaker's ability to know intuitively when to interpose and when to let nature take its course.

The essence of Martin Ray is a no-compromise approach that insists on two compelling factors: hillside vineyards and intuitive winemaking. This is the tradition that inspired the original Martin Ray, and which inspires the wines that today bear his name.

The Martin Ray intuitive winemaking method includes low SO 2 management, 100% French Oak barrel fermentation, open top-tanks, punching down the caps, extended barrel maturation and lengthy bottle aging. During his lifetime, Ray was one of the few California Winemakers, outside of Europe to use such meticulous techniques, which is why many considered Ray to be a visionary, and why he is frequently called "the father of California fine wines."

MARTIN RAY PINOT NOIR 2007

Winery Notes: " When it comes to Pinot Noir, we apply traditional Burgundian winemaking techniques. The key to our winemaking is the "intuitive" approach of understanding when to step back and not to over manipulate the wine. Our goal is to allow the wine to develop its own depth and distinctive characteristics. Three days "cold soaked", fermented at moderate temperatures and twelve months of aging in French oak barrels develops a rounder, creamier texture in the wine. The 2007 Santa Barbara County Pinot Noir has a brilliant garnet color and aromas of berries and vanilla. The palate is full and sensual with ripe raspberry and strawberry, elegantly balanced with vanilla. The mouth boasts creamy, supple texture and opulent fruit, fused with smooth but bright flavors on the finish."

MARTIN RAY CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2007

Martin Ray Cabernet Sauvignon is a superb blend of grapes grown in the three distinguished appellations: Napa Valley, Mendocino County and Sonoma County. The Napa Valley component is comprised of vineyards from Atlas Peak, Oak Knoll, Diamond Mountain District & Stags Leap District, where high elevations and volcanic soils result in small, intense berries. The ridge top vineyards in Mendocino County which are exposed to the maritime influences of the Pacific Ocean, produce grapes with rich color and flavors. The balance comes from vineyards in the Alexander Valley and Sonoma Valley appellations of Sonoma County, where distinctive flavors and varietal characteristics are influenced by unique soil compositions.

Winery Notes: "Our Cabernet Sauvignon begins with ever-changing aromas. Ripe plum and lush vanilla back aromatics thick with exotic spice and black currant fruit. The opulent palate is reminiscent of classic Martin Ray Cabernet Sauvignon. This bright and robust wine with superb balance and structure is full of lush plum and cherry flavors that extend into an elegant finish. Aged 20 months in French oak."

MICHAEL POZZAN WINERY

Michael Pozzan Winery is owned and operated by Michael and Mary Ann Pozzan, both natives of California. Michael was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, but spent his summer months with his grandparents on their 35 acre vineyard estate in Sonoma County. Michael's grandfather purchased the land in the town of Healdsburg after WWII and planted Zinfandel grapes which he sold to local wineries. He always made sure that he retained a portion of the grapes to make his own wine. With roots extending to Piemonte, Italy, Michael's family still owns the original vineyard that Michael's great grandfather planted over 100 years ago. Michael has benefited greatly from his family's experience and expertise, and has continued the tradition by creating fine wines here in California. Michael Pozzan Winery was founded in 1991 and is based in Oakville, California, in the heart of the Napa Valley. The winery currently produces ONLY 95,000 cases a year.

The Annabella line is a collection of wines that are sourced from premium vineyards throughout the Sonoma and Napa Valleys. Named in honor of Michael's grandmother, they include a Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Chardonnay. These wines represent not only quality, but value as well. Because of their popularity and limited production, the Annabella wines are allocated on an annual basis.

DOMAINE DE LA COURTADE

Domaine de la Courtade has a fascinating location, being it is relatively unknown (at least, to Americans) region of France called Cotes de Provence, on Porquerolles Island. It is just one of just thee estates on the Ile de Porquerolles, the largest of the Iles de Hyères. This is a group of three tiny islands off the coast of Provence, accessible by ferry from Le Lavandou or Toulon-Hyères. The island of Porquerolles combines the benefits of the Mediterranean climate to the characteristics of its island.

The estate was purchased by Henri Vidal in 1979, who employed Dijon graduate Richard Authur to develop and maintain a vineyard. The harvest is manual, with extensive destemming of fruit, temperature controlled fermentation, and up to nine months in oak thereafter for whites, up to eighteen for reds. The white is Rolle, harvested at 40 hl/ha. Called Rolle in France it is the same varietal as Vermentino the grape found in many great Italian wines.

DOMAINE DE LA COURTADE L'ALYCASTRE WHITE 2009

Winery Notes: " The nose is clean, fresh and open, exhibiting fresh apple fruit, zingy citrus (lemon/lime) and mineral notes. Also a touch of grapefruit and an herbal note. On the palate it has sharp, lemony citrus and pink grapefruit flavors, dabs of mineral/stone and a good bite of acidity. Through the midpalate it remains clean, crisp and refreshing, with good balance. This is the antithesis of a fat, oaky chardonnay; it is more like a clean and vibrant, unoaked sauv-blanc."
PERFECT SUMMER WINE ENJOY!

SATURDAY WINE TASTING: LOUIS LATOUR TODAY 1-5 PM

Posted by Admin on Jun 26, 2010 - 12:24 PM

WE HAVE ANOTHER GREAT TASTING IN STORE FOR YOU TODAY!

MAISON LOUIS LATOUR

The family-run company of Maison Louis Latour is one of the most highly-respected négociant-éléveurs in Burgundy. Renowned throughout the world for the quality of its red and white wines, the company has built a reputation for tradition and innovation.

Regarded as one of the traditional négociant-éléveurs, Maison Louis Latour is the producer of some of the finest Burgundian wines but has also pioneered the production of fine wines from outside of the confines of Burgundy.

These wines from the Ardèche and the Côteaux de Verdon are slowly gaining esteem for their unmatchable quality outside of Burgundy.

The Latour family themselves have been viticulteurs since the 17th century, slowly building up a unique Domaine of 50 hectares (125 acres). This Domaine has the largest Grand Cru property in the Cote d'Or with a total of 28,63 hectares (71,58 acres) . The vineyards extend from Chambertin in the north to Chevalier-Montrachet in the south and are solely planted with the two noble grape varieties ; Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

All of the grapes from the vineyards they own are vinified and aged in the attractive cuverie of Château Corton Grancey in Aloxe-Corton. The winery was the first purpose-built cuverie in France and remains the oldest still-functioning. A unique rail-way system with elevators allows the entire wine-making process to be achieved by the use of gravity. This eliminates the threat of oxidation from unnecessary pumping of the must. Since 1985 Louis Latour has been selling the wines of its own vineyards under the name Domaine Louis Latour.

The Latour family founded the 'Maison de négoce', an important shipping company, in 1797 and is still based at 18 Rue des Tonneliers in Beaune. The company is unique in Burgundy in that it is still to this day family owned and family run, having passed down from father to son for over ten generations.

In 1997 to celebrate our Bicentenary, we published a commemorative book and were admitted into the exclusive club of the Hénokiens. This club only admits companies that are leaders in their respective fields, remain family owned, have a history of 200 years' experience and still bares the name of the founder.

There are only approximately 30 of these companies in the world. To this day Maison Louis Latour ships its wines to over 60 different countries worldwide and will be found on some of the most famous dining tables around the globe.

LOUIS LATOUR GRAND ARDECHE
Consistency of climate and abundant sunshine in the Ardèche perfectly ripen these bunches of grapes , whilst the drying Mistral wind eliminates any risk of rot. The Grand Ardèche is treated as if it were grown in one of the Grand Cru vineyards of the Côte-d’Or. Fully-ripened grapes are selected and pressed lightly before being aged in oak barrels made at the Latour cooperage in Beaune.

Yellow-green in colour, the Grand Ardèche has a subtle nose of vanilla. On the palate there are soft notes of spice and vanilla. This is a round and powerful wine.

LOUIS LATOUR POUILLY FUISSE 2008
Pouilly-Fuissé is the name of a village in the Mâconnais producing highly distinctive Chardonnay wine. The vineyards producing this wine are part of a breath-taking landscape where the limestone and heavy clay soils combine to create a unique ‘terroir’. The wine shows a green-gold colour, and delicate aromas on the nose that are disarmingly seductive. On the palate there is a round and full herbal fruitiness that complements the crisp acidity leading to a satisfying finish.

The 2008 Pouilly-Fuissé has a lovely yellow-gold colour. The aromas of honey, exotic fruits, mango and pepper perfectly accompany the richness and roundness of the wine in the mouth.
Reg. $24.99 . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE . . . $18.99

LOUIS LATOUR SANTENAY BLANC 2006
With only 5% of the total hectarage under vine being planted with Chardonnay, this wine is something of a rarity. Comingfrom the famous spa-town of Santenay, which serves as a rest-cure for those committed to long-term Burgundian indulgence, this white wine is fresh and bursting with ripe apple and nut notes. The finish is smooth and pleasurable.

Clear, bright, pale yellow in color, Santenay Blanc will seduce you with its citrus and candied lemon nose. The mouth is frank and clean, with lovely freshness and pleasant roundness. The citrus notes in the mouth combine with a distinct minerality. Vibrant finish with great length.
Reg. $19.99 . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE . . . $14.99

LOUIS LATOUR MARSANNAY BLANC 2006
Marsannay is the most northerly village in the Cotes de Nuits, just 6 km to the south-west of Dijon. Here starts the Route des Grands Crus which goes through the Côte d’Or vineyards. White Marsannays run through the entire range of citrus aromas and white flowers. In the mouth, the wine is full and round. It is delicious while still young but, a few years of cellaring will make it even more appealing.

Delicate vegetal aromas like elder tree flower and almond emerge from this supple and subtle Marsannay.
Reg. $24.99 . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE . . . $17.99

LOUIS LATOUR CHASSAGNE MONTRACHET BLANC 2007
The village of Chassagne-Montrachet is the last and most southerly of the three great white winemaking appellations in the Côte de Beaune. The wines are fat and opulent, dominated by tropical fruit aromas and flavours. Twelve months of ageing in oak barrels adds to the wine’s rich texture.

Chassagne-Montrachet 2007 has a lovely, pale golden color. On the nose, peach, apricot and mango combine with subtle roasted hazelnut notes. The mouth-feel is full and fat with an herbal finale.
Reg. $35.99 . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE . . . $29.99

LOUIS LATOUR MARANGES ROUGE 2005
Situated to the south-west of Santenay, the Maranges appellation is at the southernmost tip of the Côte de Beaune. The Pinot Noir vineyards are planted on well-exposed south-east facing slopes, and the wines thrive on the heavy clay soil. The wines tend to be firm and tannic when young. Maranges has an excellent capacity for ageing with fine structure and intensity of Pinot Noir fruit character.

Deep ruby in color, Maranges 2005 expresses straightforward and intense aromas. On the nose, there are notes of cherries, musk and underbrush. This wine has great balance with flavors of black fruit and licorice on the finish. Drinking now through 2012.
Reg. $24.99 . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE . . . $17.99

LOUIS LATOUR MERCUREY ROUGE
The name of Mercurey and its reputation as a viticultural commune date from the period when the Roman legions erected a temple there to Mercury, their God of Commerce and Trade amongst other things. As regards the character of the wine, Mercurey possesses an individual appeal despite obvious parralels with the Côte de Beaune. Typically, it has a penetrating, earthy fruitiness allied to an ample backbone with plenty of grip on the palate.

Ruby-red in colour, the Mercurey has aromas of coffee on the nose which evolve with time into notes of liquorice and fern. On tasting, the wine is round and powerful.
Reg. $29.99 . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE . . . $23.99

LOUIS LATOUR CHASSAGNE MONTRACHET 1ER CRU “MORGEOT” ROUGE
Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru “Morgeot” lies mid-slope with a south-easterly exposure. “Morgeot” is in fact a hamlet of Chassagne-Montrachet. The vines have been planted since the Maizières Abbey decided to clear the land and replant the Morgeot soils in the XVth Century. Only a quarter of the appellation’s premier crus are planted with Pinot Noir. The Morgeot reds are balanced, however sometimes a little closed when young, but to the savvy amateur with patience, they can offer generous aromas of small red fruits and fine tannins, together creating a beautiful harmony.

Your eyes are instantly drawn to the intense ruby red colour of this Chassagne. Complex aromas of cassis buds, raspberries, pepper and liquorice reveal themselves on the nose. On tasting there are red fruit flavours and the tannins are still pleasantly noticeable. Lovely balance and impressive structure in the mouth produce a wine which needs more ageing before its full potential is attained.

METTLER FAMILY VINEYARDS

The Mettler family has been growing grapes for eight generations, dating back to a small German, now French village Alsace.  They have been growing premium wine grapes in the Lodi appellation for five generations.  They are one of the very first farming families to introduce French clones to our region, and have experience growing many varieties of grapes.  They farm hundreds of acres some of which date back to our families original properties, which are over 100 years old.

The Cabernet is selected from very small blocks of vineyards, which are trained on special trellis systems, one which was originally designed by Jason, the vineyard manager and Larry.  The trellis systems allow just the right amount of sunlight to grace the fruit on the vine.  The crop level is controlled using minimum use of water and hand thinning.  The wine is an expression of where and how the grapes are grown, including the clonal choice, vineyard sites, trellis, crop management and expertise of the winemaker.  As they personally manage the entire process, paying close attention to every detail.

The Mettler family is committed to being on the cutting edge concerning the farming of our vineyards.  Their dedication to this and the personal control they have over the vineyards allows them to master the quality of the wines from the vineyard to the bottle.

Also incorporated into the farming program are many organic aspects. Cover crops are grown in the vineyards, providing a means of protecting and improving the soil structure. This enables the organic matter within the soils to keep turning over, which helps build and maintain the structure and fertility of the soils, which promotes a more natural approach to farming. Owl boxes have also been built to create homes for owls to reside and raise their young, promoting natural rodent control in the vineyards. This helps protect young vines and shoots from becoming nibbled on and destroyed.

They also farm their vineyards using the latest biologically integrated farming system. This program was designed to monitor the appellations vineyards, reducing chemical usage and placing pest traps in vineyards to guard against such destructive pests as the glassy winged sharp shooter. Reduction of water and fertilizers in our vineyards along with integrated pest management (IPM) keep our vineyards healthy, and our wine quality consistent.

The personal control they have over their vineyards allows them to master the quality of wines from the vineyard to the bottle. At Mettler Family Vineyards, the vines are part of the family.

METTLER CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2007
Winery Notes: "Cabernet Sauvignon has always been a family favorite. It is a wine varietal we chose to focus on many years ago when deciding to bottle our own wines. Our Cabernet is aged in French Oak barrels for over 13 months, giving it a rich toasty taste, with accents of vanilla. This polished Cabernet will delight your palate with a nice balance of bright fruit and structured tannins. Our Cabernet vineyards are farmed organically, which to our family was an important aspect in keeping our family ranch full of goodness for the future generations to enjoy and prosper with. We hope our close attention to detail not only in the vineyards but in our winemaking will show in the first sip you enjoy of our wine. Our 2007 Cabernet is a true crowd pleaser, and a wine that will not disappoint.

We invite you to enjoy our Cabernet, rich with forward fruit, nicely balanced tannins and a velvety smooth finish. Medium to dark in color the nose on this is a big spoonful of blueberry pop tart filling mixed with equal parts saddle leather, earth, and tobacco. On the palate it’s fruit, fruit, fruit forward up front. Solid but not overbearing tannins hit in the mids to pull back the fruit, ending with a long blackberry, blueberry, and a hint of leather finish.”

PEARSON’S WEEKEND SALE PRICE . . . $17.99

METTLER “LODI”OLD VINE ZINFANDEL 2007

Our Zinfandel is harvested from one of our oldest vineyards, where the vines are deeply rooted in sandy loam soils. This Old Vine Zinfandel shows good structure with aromas of wild berry and espresso, giving way to dense tannins and a nice acidity to the finish. This intense, rich and well balanced Zin will captivate you, instantly becoming a focal point in your mind as you yearn for more. “

PEARSON’S WEEKEND SALE PRICE . . . $17.99

METTLER PETIT SIRAH 2005
Winery Notes: “Our 2005 Petite Sirah has been a true crowd pleaser, original and tantalizing. A lot more approachable on your palate than the stereotypical petite sirah. Our 2005 Petite Sirah is fruit forward and luscious, yet has the backbone a petite sirah should demonstrate.

Our petite sirah is grown organically, which our family feels is a commitment to high quality fruit from our vineyards going forth to making exceptional quality wines. This petite sirah has an amazing mouthfeel  which is followed by an incredible burst of deep fruit and complex oak undertones. This wine is a unique taste experience that you shouldn't miss the opportunity to enjoy.”

CHALONE VINEYARDS

The belief is that finding sites that resemble the traditional French sites for a varietal will allow for the highest expression of deliciousness. All the wines from Chalone Vineyard are made from their own 100-percent-estate-grown fruit in limited production. Chalone Vineyard is the sole winery in the Chalone American Viticultural Area (AVA), a federally designated area that has climatic, geologic and geographic features that distinguish it from the land surrounding it.

In 1972, Richard Graff and Phil Woodward established Chalone Wine Group in the region. This is one of the great success stories in the state’s wine industry. Richard Graff’s winemaking and Phil Woodward’s business acumen have had a lasting impact on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay production in the Golden State.

One of the major reasons that Chardonnay vineyards do so well here is the fact that Chalone’s climate closely resembles the Burgundy region in France which is the home of these two grapes. Chalone Vineyards are grown on sunny mountain slopes that are cooled by breezes from Monterey Bay and the Pacific Ocean. Located in the eastern hills of Salinas Valley, Chalone Wine Country is one of the windiest places in all of Monterey County.

The critical and commercial success of Chalone Wineries is not just due to climate; terrain plays an important role as well. Made primarily of limestone and decomposed granite, Chalone’s hillside soils are remarkably similar to the Cote d’Or in Burgundy. Resulting wines have noticeable minerality on the nose and palate. This is one of the distinguishing characteristics of Chalone Wine Country.

Chalone’s history of wine production is a story of dedication and tenacity. In 1919, a French immigrant named Charles Tamm began planting vineyards on the isolated hillsides. He used a horse and cart to transport water to his property for irrigation. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir connoisseurs should be very thankful for Tamm’s early sacrifices. In 1982, the Federal Government granted the Chalone wine region official AVA status.

CHALONE ESTATE CHARDONNAY 2007
The 2007 Chardonnay ranks among the very finest that Chalone Vineyard has produced.
#29 Wine Spectator Top 100 Wines of 2009

Wine Spectator 92 points: "Exhibits a complex mix of subtle pear and mineral with pleasant earthy notes and floral scents. Tight and full-bodied, ending with a long, persistent finish. Drink now through 2012."

Winery Notes: “Our 2007 Estate Chardonnay is a true expression of Chalone’s unique terroir capturing the very essence of our vineyard with toasty aromas of hazelnut, stone fruit, white pear and a unique minerality. On the palate, there is a bright acidity that mingles with flavors of fleshy pear, apricot, a bit of apple and is marked by Chalone's distinctive minerality which comes from our vineyard’s unique limestone and decomposed granite soils.”

SATURDAY WINE TASTING: FROG'S LEAP WINERY 3-7 PM

Posted by Admin on Apr 17, 2010 - 04:14 AM

Frog's Leap was founded by the Williams Family in 1981 on a spot along Mill Creek known as the Frog Farm. An old ledger revealed that around the turn of the century, frogs were raised on the property then sold for $.33 a dozen, destined no doubt, for the tables of Victorian San Francisco gourmets.

Frog's Leap makes its home amongst 130 acres of vineyards in Rutherford at the historic Red Barn. This grand and welcoming building was built in 1884 as the Adamson Winery and renovated in 1994 as Frog's Leap's permanent home. Frog's Leap's annual production of almost 60,000 cases is comprised of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Rutherford.

Using the best of Napa Valley's organically grown grapes and the most traditional winemaking techniques, Frog's Leap strives to produce wines that deeply reflect the soils and climate from which they emanate. Frog's Leap produces some of Napa Valley's finest wines and, undoubtedly, has one of the wine worlds best mottos: Time's fun when you're having flies.

FROG’S LEAP SAUVIGNON BLANC NAPA VALLEY 2008
ALWAYS’S ONE OF THE BEST SAUVIGNON BLANC’S FOR THE MONEY!
Winery Notes: Crisp, bright, refreshing: three words that capture the essence of the 2008 Frog's Leap Sauvignon Blanc. Classic aromas of lemongrass, white flowers and subtle mineral notes are your introduction, followed by flavors of grapefruit, lemon zest and delicate white peaches. The wine’s connection to its Rutherford roots is underscored with subtle flavors of wet stone. Lean and lively, the wine's low alcohol and balanced acid make for a totally engaging and pleasurable experience deftly suited for a table filled with "le fruit de mer."
Reg $24.99 . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE . . . $18.99

FROG’S LEAP ZINFANDEL NAPA VALLEY 2007
76% Zinfandel 19% Petit Sirah 5% Carignane
Wine & Spirits 91 points: "This floral zin has a cool, wild blueberry tone edged by red spice. The zesty fruit brightens the tannins’ darker earth and mushroom savor. There’s tension to the structure, and harmonious balance in the length of flavor. Delicious now to decant for roast quail stuffed with wild mushrooms, this is also suited to age."

Winery Notes: “The wide range of aromas and flavors in our 2007 Zinfandel can again be attributed to its “field blend” origin. Grown and sometimes co-fermented together the three varietals of this wine—Zinfandel, Petite sirah and Carignane—each play critical roles in defining the wine’s character. The Zin tastes of wild berries and briary fruit marked with a touch of spice, while the ‘Pets’ adds dark color and a weighty mid-palate leaving the carignane to account for the bright acidity and slight earthiness. Dry farmed and organically grown, the wine never feels over-blown yet it is full of juicy flavors of cherry and boysenberry underlined with layers of earth and spice. Plus, with an alcohol under 14%, it makes a wonderful companion to your next backyard barbeque.”
Reg $29.99 . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE . . . $19.99

FROG’S LEAP CHARDONNAY NAPA VALLEY 2008
Winery Notes: “Fresh and vibrant, the 2008 Frog’s Leap Chardonnay abandons contemporary trends of big oak and butter for crisp acidity and a bright finish. Aromas of pear and white peaches are layered with delicate notes of honeysuckle and peach blossoms. The wine enters the palate with flavors of green apple, citrus, and a hint of vanilla; all underscored by its racier mineral-and-slate essence. With a finish that is clean and tart, it practically begs for the next sip-making it a great wine to pair with your meal.”

Reg $35.99 . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE . . . $26.99

FROG’S LEAP CABERNET SAUVIGNON NAPA VALLEY 2006
Winery Notes: “Our 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon opens with a richly fragrant nose of luscious black fruit and fresh herbs, followed by a taste progression that captures the essence of the terroir from which it came. Intense flavors of cassis, ripe plum and black currants are punctuated by hints of cedar and tobacco. The wine’s velvety tannins are well integrated with fine acidity to create a finish that will endure well after the last course has been cleared.”

SATURDAY SALE: WONDERFUL 92PT SEQUANA PINOT NOIR/ CHATEAU LA BARONNE BLANC 50% OFF

Posted by Admin on Mar 20, 2010 - 12:13 PM
Sequana Pinot Noir 07

SEQUANA VINEYARDS

The Santa Lucia Highlands overlook Monterey County's Salinas Valley. The southeast facing slopes benefit from morning sun, followed by afternoon sea breezes and moderate nighttime temperatures. Vines develop deep roots in the alluvial soils deposited over ancient marine terraces. This region, with its long growing season, allows Pinot Noir to flourish, producing wines characterized by flavors of wild cherry and earthiness. Winegrower James MacPhail describes this setting as, "nothing short of spectacular." The Sarmento Vineyard sits on benchlands of ancient, tilted alluvial soils topped with rock-studded sandy loam. Grapes for the Sarmento Pinot Noir come from two separate 10-year-old vineyard blocks - each with a unique clone. This family-owned, sustainably-farmed vineyard benefits from its southeast exposure and cool climate. Pinot Noir grapes from the Sarmento Vineyard ripen for full flavor development.

Rising Star to All Star - James MacPhail quickly earned a reputation for bringing out the best in single vineyard Pinot Noir. Beginning in the mid- 1990s, he carefully designed his winemaking education by working with Pinot Noir leaders Merry Edwards and Gary Farrell.

Today, James is dedicated exclusively to producing small lots of distinctive Pinot Noir. James enjoys industry-wide respect for his consistent track record, producing prized wines from vineyards in the Sonoma Coast and Anderson Valley appellations under his own label, MacPhail Family Wines. His acclaimed wines captured the attention of industry veteran Tom Selfridge. In 2007, Tom approached James and asked him to create a new winery - Sequana. James accepted the leadership role because, "It gives me the rare opportunity to work with vineyards in two of California's finest Pinot Noir appellations: Green Valley of Russian River Valley and Santa Lucia Highlands." Sequana is his only project other than his own label, MacPhail Family Wines.

James has cultivated close relationships with the finest growers in the cool climate regions of the California coast. Mindful of the strong connection between vineyard and grape quality, he works only with sustainably-grown grapes. All the vineyards are small, family-owned and eco-friendly. "These farmers really share my passion," he says. A modern man who enjoys his iPod and Blackberry, James works in the gentle world of traditional winemaking. He makes his Pinot Noirs by hand in small batches, using cold masceration and native yeasts. These techniques respect the characteristic of each single vineyard, amplifying the aromas and flavors. "My goal is to express each vineyard's personality," says James.

SEQUANA PINOT NOIR SARMENTO VINEYARD 2007

Wine Spectator 92 points: "Deliciously complex, with a rich range of flavors built around loamy currant, blackberry, plum and sassafras. Gets more interesting with every sip."

Winery Notes: "The 2007 Pinot Noir showcases the complexity associated with the Santa Lucia Highlands: wild berry, Bing cherry, black pepper, mint, anise and clean earth. Fruit forward and finely textured, this wine has a long, lingering finish."

PATRICIA GREEN CELLARS

Patricia Green Cellars is located in the Ribbon Ridge district of Yamhill County on the 52 acre estate purchased in 2000 by Patty Green and Jim Anderson. The winery, and thus the two friends, are noted for producing a tremendously broad selection of Pinot Noirs from far flung vineyards representing some of the better sites in the Ribbon Ridge, Dundee Hills, Chehalem Mountains, and the Eola Hills growing regions. We look to produce Pinot Noirs that show the distinctions of the sites we work with. All of the vineyards we either maintain or purchase fruit from are extremely well-tended sites that seek to grow the best fruit possible through rigorous attention to detail on every single vine. To ensure that our sites truly show the characteristics of the soil, micro-climate and clonal material none of them use irrigation.

In the winery the philosophy of attention to the smallest details is further extended all the way from the fermenting must to the final bottling process. All of the wines at all points of evolution are handled and manipulated as little as possible while being smelled and tasted on a regular basis. The selection of barrels has been limited to one cooper noted for producing some of the best made Pinot Noir barrels in the world. As they produce as many as 15-16 different bottlings of Pinot Noir under their own label each vintage the decisions they make about the quality of every single barrel is quite rigorous ensuring that each bottling represents the best possible wine from each vineyard with which they work.

At the very least Patty Green is a study in climbing the winemaking ladder.
She began by leaving the re-forestation business to pick grapes at Hillcrest Vineyard outside of Roseburg. By 1987 she was working in the winery more or less as the Assistant Winemaker. In 1988 and 1989 she was pretty much given the reins. As this was Hillcrest Vineyard that meant she could pretty much experiment with anything she saw as interesting and informative. In 1990 and 1991 she was consulting for Ashland Vineyards and Girardet Winery while working crush at Adelsheim Winery. In 1992 she became the winemaker at La Garza Vineyards while keeping a busy schedule of consultation work.

All of this was the prelude to her developing her reputation as one of Oregons top Pinot Noir winemakers. In 1993 she began as the winemaker and sole employee of Torii Mor Winery. In the first vintage she produced about 1,200 cases of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris. When she left with the 1999 vintage in barrel there were 9 labels of Pinot Noir, 2 labels of Chardonnay as well as the small quantity of Pinot Gris. A slew of 90+ point scores on wines from the 93-97 vintages, nods of acknowledgment from numerous national wine critics, widespread recognition within Oregons wine community as a talent to watch and near cult-like status from Pinot drinkers (you cant imagine how many people have asked her if she is the Famous Patty Green or the Wonderful Patty Green or some other descriptive adjective) were all accorded to her in the 6+ vintages she tended to there. But sometimes you have to move on.

The Pinot Noirs she seeks to create are based upon an idea of how she believes each individual vineyard expresses its fruit profile and how she can take that individual expression and lay it over a foundation of richness, silkiness and complexity.

2008 Pinot Noir is a vintage NOT TO MISSED. Wine Spectator just rated the 2008 vintage 95-100 points with a Classic Vintage Rating.

And we have the new 2008 wine releases from Patricia Green. The demand for her wines are always strong and her wines always sell out quickly.

PATRICIA GREEN CHARDONNAY 2008
Winery Notes: Not to be left out of the discussion of wines from this vineyard would be the Chardonnay. We have developed more of an appreciation for this vineyards ability to give us the kind of fruit we wanted as we figured out more and more what kind of wine we wanted to make from this site. All the new barrels are long gone and at this point the newest barrel in the Chardonnay has been used five times. We are also starting to pick at a point where we still have some greener berries mixed into some of the bunches. That gives us a hint more acidity than we have had in the past pushing the wine further and further into the lemon candy/lemon curd flavor profile that we love and are trying to coax out of our wine. In 2003 and 2004 we felt as though we were looking to the wines of the Macon or village level Meursaults for our inspiration. With the 2005 we definitely stare into Chablis with a wine that is full of lemony goodness, a dollop of crushed oyster shell and some spice on the finish. This is a lean, mean fighting machine. Not for everyone but you will love it if this in your genre of Chardonnays. 330 cases bottled.

PATRICIA GREEN FOUR WINDS PINOT NOIR 2008
Winery Notes: This is not only the best bottling of Four Winds we have ever done (by a long shot) it is one of the best wines of the vintage. It is simply incredible in every way. From the electric black/purple pigmentation to the wild berry/smoke/earth/licorice aromatics to the sheer intensity and concentration of flavors to the massive texture supported by firm tannins this wine is a rock star. This bottling has not always been everyones cup of tea. Those who have liked this have loved it and those not so attracted to it tended to find it distastefully earthy and odd. This wine will not be nearly as polarizing. There is a lot to love about this wine because there is a lot of stuffing packed into this wine. This is a dynamo. We waited patiently for these vines to show the benefit of some vine age and we think we are beginning to see the fruition of that patience. Didnt hurt that this came in at slightly over 1 ton to the acre either. Stock up if you have been a fan in the past or jump on the bandwagon if you havent been a disciple in the past. 320 cases bottled.
Reg $36.99 . . . PEARSON'S TASTING SALE PRICE . . . $29.99

PATRICIA GREEN BALCOMBE PINOT NOIR 2008
Winery Notes : "This bottling has the sweetness of red fruit, high-toned acidity, and super-silky tannins that make Balcombe Vineyard such a terrific and sought-after site. There is a great deal of intensity in this particular wine and while its nature tends toward femininity and elegance there is an underlying darkness and strength to it that provide a whole different dimension. Fans of this bottling will love this vintage as it is mouth-watering, smooth, and rich, and it possesses so much substance that it will be terrific for many years down the road."
Reg $44.99 . . . PEARSON'S TASTING SALE PRICE . . . $35.99

PATRICIA GREEN ESTATE PINOT NOIR 2008
Winery Notes: This bottling is designed to show off the inherent power that younger vines display in the Ribbon Ridge Appellation. There is a darkness that runs through this wine from its color, to its aromatic profile, into the flavors and down into the tannins that finish it off. While other qualities resonate in flashes such as violets and bing cherries in the nose and rose petal and loam in the mid-palate the background of power and darkness is always there. While this wine is not truly a powerful wine as it is quite graceful it has a brooding character that gives it quite a bit of depth. This is a terrific expression of the type of subtle power wines from the Ribbon Ridge Appellation contain. Sort of like Baryshnikov doing Swan Lake in a leather jacket while carrying brass knuckles.
Reg $44.99 . . . PEARSON'S TASTING SALE PRICE . . . $35.99

PATRICIA GREEN NOTORIOUS PINOT NOIR 2008
Winery Notes: "This blend changes each vintage based on what we think are the most exotic barrels the cellar has to offer...We chose based on the superbly rich, dense, creamy, and full-bodied natures of these barrels. This wine is a marvel in 2008. What is truly recognizable even at this young age is the length of this wine. There is so much substance that is so well-balanced that it carries on and on. Buy it for its concentration, depth, and exotic fruit but cellar and savor it for its length and complexity. This is a beautiful, beautiful, wine. 135 cases bottled."

Everyone from Robert Parker to Wine Spectator are raving about this wine. Because of it's limited production, there is very little to go around. At this price, it's an excellent buy for Rhone collectors or all of you looking to get in on some of the red hot 2007 Rhones!

This old magnificent label from the 1820s is great, great, grand father, Baron Eugene de Montfaucon, with all the history that was behind Montfaucon wines. In order to make a wine in the spirit of those days nearly 200 years ago, they fermented together all the grapes we have on the estate, 15 in total. The wine is racked straight into barrels after fermentation, as they did in the old days. This wine, unique in its style, is all in finesse, fruit, flower and elegance. It is in its own world, out of this time. It will seduce wine lovers, connoisseurs and collectors. Just take a look at the 15 grape varietals in the wine: Red grape varieties: Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault, Carignan, Counoise, Mourvedre, Muscat, Aubun, Alicante, Tempranille. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 92 points: "The 2007 Vin de Pays Le Baron de Montfaucon is a 500-case cuvee made from an unusual combination of 15 different grapes that are all co-fermented together. Aged in 100% old barrels, this outstanding wine's dense ruby/purple color is followed by exotic notes of honeysuckle, marmalade, red currants, black currants, blackberries, licorice, loamy soil, and tobacco leaf. Singular in style and seriously endowed, it can be drunk now or cellared for 5-7 years."

CALI CAB LEGEND LOUIS M. MARTINI: SATURDAY ONE DAY SALE

Posted by Admin on Jan 23, 2010 - 04:10 PM
Louis Martini Napa

Louis Michael Martini was born in 1887 near Genoa, Italy. At age 12 he traveled to San Francisco to help his father, who had a small business selling fresh seafood to local merchants. Father and son first made wine in their backyard in 1906. From that moment Louis knew what he wanted to do with his life. At 19, he went back to Italy to study winemaking with the masters there, then returned to California to begin a lifetime with wine, vine, and land. Louis made wine with his father, and when his parents returned to Italy in 1918, he worked as a consulting winemaker, taking a variety of jobs in and around the wine business. Throughout Prohibition he made wine to be used in religious services. He opened his first winery in 1922, during the depths of Prohibition, showing foresight and intuition that would serve him all his life. Louis M. Martini founded his Napa Valley winery in 1933 and became known as a pioneer in California winemaking. His son, Louis P. Martini, took over as winemaker in 1954, then turned the reins over to his son Michael in 1977, who is the Senior Winemaker today. The winery specializes in crafting rich and distinctive Cabernet Sauvignon varietal wines.

Cabernet Sauvignon has been the flagship wine at Louis Martini for decades and continues to be the main attraction.
Louis M. Martini has stated "We believe that Cabernet Sauvignon is the most noble of grapes. We believe that great winemaking begins with great vineyards, and we want the land to speak through our wines. Our wines express the best characteristics of Cabernet, the personality of the special places where our grapes are grown, and the vision and skill of the winemaker in blending balanced, engaging, and memorable wines."

LOUIS M. MARTINI CABERNET SAUVIGNON SONOMA COAST 2007
Robert Parker Wine Advocate 90 points: "An exquisite value, this is a seductive, fleshy, fruity wine with excellent texture, body, and balance. Lots of cassis as well as silky tannins characterize this top bargain pick! Drink it over the next 5-7 years. "
The Wine News 92 points: "Vibrant purple hue. Uplifting blackberry aromas followed by notes of mint, toasted oak and vanilla coffee bean. Tasty layers of black fruit laced with smoky oak and anise-like richness. A remarkably low-priced, well- made offering drinking nicely right now."

Martini includes a superb bargain, the 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon, a 7,000-case blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, and the rest Syrah and Petit Verdot. Its deep ruby/plum color is accompanied by sweet blue and red fruits intertwined with hints of loamy soil, licorice, and subtle background oak. With good flavor as well as silky tannins, this well- balanced, concentrated 2006 should be even better over the next 10-15 years. It is a big-time sleeper of the vintage. "

WE HAVE A GREAT SATURDAY SCOTCH TASTING TODAY WITH CHIVAS REGAL AND GLENLIVET. SO COME ON BY AND TASTE SOME OF THE BEST BLENDED SCOTCHES IN THE WORLD.

CHIVAS REGAL

James and John Chivas' ambition was 'to provide customers with products of the highest quality.' Because the Single Malts of the time were harsh and often poorly matured, they dreamt of creating a whisky that could be easily appreciated and shared amongst friends. This was soon realized as the store in Aberdeen became an Epicurean delight. As well as scouring the Highlands and Lowlands in their search for fine things for their wealthy clientele to eat and drink, they provided products from all across the world - rich coffee, exotic spices, the finest French Brandies and rums from the Caribbean. They found however that they were unable to provide a whisky that met their exacting standards.

Blending together only the finest aged whiskies, they produced a smooth and generous product that was very different to others available at the time. Word of their new whisky soon spread. And before long it became unthinkable for a host to entertain guests without a bottle of their whisky in his hand. It was this passion for blending superb whiskies and years of perfecting their art, that led to the creation of the ultimate blend, that of Chivas Regal.

Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr, and the rest of the "Rat Pack" were cooler than the ice in a heavy tumbler of Chivas Regal. Wise guys every one of them, sizing everyone up, then giving them the golden tap on the shoulder and bringing them in. They performed on stage together, acted together and partied together. Chivas Regal soon became a symbol of their exuberant lifestyle - a luxury that seemed to mirror both their enthusiasm for life and the underlying quality that provided the foundation for their self-belief.

So wherever you are, you'll find Chivas Regal at the heart of almost any occasion where good times are being shared with friends. Welcome to 'The Chivas Life'.

CHIVAS REGAL 12 YEAR OLD
Wine Enthusiast 90-95 points: "Gold/Amber color. The enchantingly sweet and delicate nose is soft and refined, emitting mature, bountiful aromas of pears, apricots and heather. The palate entry is smoky, then the roasted, peaty, qualities accelerate in the throat where they seem to cascade in a complex, vanilla, butterscotch aftertaste that lingers. The intricate flavors are beautifully melded and somehow keep evolving at the rear of the tongue."

CHIVAS REGAL 18 YEAR OLD
The special triple blending process make Chivas Regal 18 Year Old the smoothest, richest Scotch Whisky in the World.
Wine Enthusiast 96-100 points: "The wonderful bouquet includes scents of bacon fat, honey, orange rind with deeper smells of black pepper, cinnamon, vanilla bean and pipe tobacco. Entry is silky smooth, semisweet, concentrated and honeyed; the midpalate offers grainy sweet, yet spicy, tangy, fruity, nutty and floral tastes. The oak element really emerges in the aftertaste, ideally completing this sensational blended Scotch. One of the finest blended Scotches in the world."

THE GLENLIVET
THE SINGLE MALT THAT STARTED IT ALL

The whisky made in Glenlivet had the highest reputation of any in Scotland, for several reasons. First, you can't make good whisky in a hurry and the Glen's remoteness made it almost impossible to police. Excise officers could be spotted miles away, leaving plenty of time to hide equipment, and, more importantly, plenty of time to carry out the distilling.

The Glenlivet has long been synonymous with the finest single malt Scotch whisky. In 1822, King George IV made a triumphant visit to Edinburgh. Sir Walter Scott, who arranged the event, made sure to procure the best whisky Scotland had to offer for the King's delectation: the whisky of Glenlivet. Throughout his week-long jaunt, the King would drink nothing else, and by the end it was reported that "he is an admirable judge of glen livat". He was not alone in his enjoyment. The same year, John Stein, one of the leading distillers in Scotland, wrote enviously: "There are some people in the higher stations of life who prefer Glenlivet whisky and who would pay almost any price for it".

The fame of Glenlivet's now well-respected fruity, floral style encouraged other distillers to attach the name to their own, even though some of them were miles from the Glen itself. Understandably, George Smith's son was not happy about this. In 1884 he obtained a settlement which required that only his malt can describe itself as 'The Glenlivet'. And to this day, there is still only one single malt whisky that has the unchallengeable right to call itself The Glenlivet. In fact, almost every Speyside distillery has, at some stage, used the name Glenlivet.

GLENLIVET 12 YEAR OLD
Wine Enthusiast 90-95 points : "Off-dry malted barley and light toffee smells great the old factory sense along flowery fragrances of heather, rose petal and pine. Entry features sweet grain and candied apricot tastes; the midpalate is mellow, malty, fruity (white raisins, apricots) and sophisticated. Ends on a buttery note. Remains the Speyside benchmark."

Selective maturation in new Limousin oak casks, usually reserved for wine, has added delicate overtones of the spices highly prized in fine wines, while perfectly complementing the subtle elegance of the original malt," explains Jim Cryle, Master Distiller at The Glenlivet Distillery. This is a beautifully balanced, rich and mellow whisky with a long creamy finish that both connoisseurs and enthusiasts will love.
Wine Enthusiast 90-95 points: "First whiffs pick up scents of fresh pineapple, cedar, and paraffin; later sniffing detect subtle notes of baked pear and sweet oak. IT IS GOING TO BE A FUN DAY SO COME ON BY WE CAN'T WAIT TO SEE YOU!

ZENI COSTALAGO ROSSO VERONESE 2007
The history of the winery began in 1800 with Bartolomeo Zeni, a professional carter with a passion for painting. He would carry the local goods, namely fish, olive oil and wine, towards the villages along the shore of Lake Garda and towards those of the neighbouring Lombardy region.
Among all the carried goods, wine was the one he was mostly familiar with, to such an extent that, beside carting it, he started trading it. The Zeni family's aptitude for wine is also mentioned in a book by Romano Brusco, a genuine inhabitant of Bardolino, deeply attached to his hometown and proud of its talented people. (The Zeni people, we all know that, are special chaps: creative, brilliant, cut out for business and for making local wines that are a real delicacy!).
Wine Spectator 89 points: "Aromas of raisin, with hints of sun-dried tomato and Indian spices, follow through to a silky, medium- to full- bodied palate, with very fine tannins and violet and chocolate notes coming through the finish. This offers a subtle framework, but it's densely packed. An interesting new winery to follow. Corvina, Corvinone, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon."
REG $15.99 . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE . . . $11.99

TOMMASI POGGIO AL TUFO ROMPICOLLO 2007

On the palate it is broad and mouth fillingm with tongue coating tannins, black cherry and boot polish flavors. Concentrated and persistent, it has a long life ahead of it."

JOSEPH PHELPS

Founded in 1972, the winery and home vineyards of Joseph Phelps are located in Spring Valley near St. Helena, on a 600-acre ranch that is characterized by rolling hills, California native oaks, and 122 acres of meticulously tended vines. Joseph Phelps Vineyards has been producing some of Napa Valley's finest wines for over 30 years. They have been innovators and pioneers in the industry since the beginning - their 1974 Insignia was the first Bordeaux-style blend produced in California under a proprietary label. Their Insignia and Backus wines continue to be some of the highest rated, most sought-after and finest wines produced.

JOSEPH PHELPS CABERNET SAUVIGNON NAPA VALLEY 2005

Winery Notes: The dark ruby-colored 2005 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon resembles a classic Bordeaux both in aromatics and flavor. A rich bouquet of cinnamon, spice, licorice, graphite and caramel are followed by integrated layers of cherry, currant, fresh cream and balanced, sweet tannin, all of which contribute to a youthful, bright, multi-layered wine.
Wine Spectator 90 points: "Smooth-textured, supple and harmonious, with subtle layers of currant, spice, herb, anise and light cedary oak, ending with a graceful mix of ripe fruit and fine- grained tannins. Drink now through 2013. 50,000 cases made."

THIS IS A GREAT WINE AND YOU WILL NOT FIND A BETTER PRICE ANYWHERE!

JOSEPH PHELPS INSIGNIA 2005

Wine Advocate 95 points: "Since 2004, 100% of the Bordeaux varietals used in the Insignia proprietary blend have been from estate vineyards. The beautiful, dense ruby/purple-tinged 2005 Insignia (a 12,500- case blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot, and 1% Malbec) possesses sweet aromas of black cherries, cassis, chocolate, camphor, and a subtle hint of roasted herbs. Medium to full-bodied and elegant, with a European style imposed on the rich, velvety, California fruit, this cuvee will benefit from several years of bottle age, and should easily keep for three decades."

Amarone Saturday

Posted by Admin on Oct 17, 2009 - 04:25 PM
Amarone With all of this cold and rainy weather we have perfect cure to warm you up with one of Italy's wine treasures.

Amarone . . .

Amarone is produced in the region of Veneto by estates that make Valpolicella, one of the most popular wines of this area in Northeastern Italy. The same grapes, primarily Corvina (usually the leading component in the blend) along with Rondinella and Molinara, are used to produce Amarone.

Amarone is a very powerful, highly textured, extremely tannic wine which can be had over the course of 7 to 15 years. Amarone comes from the Italian word amaro ("bitter"), most examples have a tartness or slightly astringent edge to them. Alternatively, you may notice a sweet edge to them that can be explained in the concentrated sugars the grapes pick up during the drying process. Certainly, the combination of raisiny and sweet black fruit can make Amarone an irresistible temptation.

And then there is Ripassa/ Ripsasso the baby brother to Amarone. While made with the same grapes as Amarone, the production method is slightly different . . . by taking the juice and "re-passing" over the pressed lees of the Amarone enables the Vapolicella to be deeper in color, richer in flavor, higher in alcohol and more extracted, and ultimately more complex. And the best part is it is generally a fraction of the cost of Amarone.

ALLEGRINI AMARONE DELLA VALPOLICELLA CALSSICO 2005

Winery Notes: "Made from Corvina Veronese, Rondinella and Oseleta grapes following a thousand- year old appassimento tradition of the Valpolicella region: After the grapes are hand-harvested, they are left to dry for three - four months in shallow racks, stored in a well-ventilated, state-of-the-art drying facility. The result is a super rich and concentrated wine. Amarone is an iconic wine, and is extremely important not just to the Valpolicella region, but to Italian winemaking on the whole.
This ruby-red wine displays warm and spicy aromas of dried cherries, plums, mocha, fig and sweet spice. On the palate it is well-structured, velvety and elegant. This wine makes an excellent pairing with roasted or grilled meats and game, hearty casseroles, aged cheeses and it also pairs brilliantly with Middle Eastern or Asian cuisine-even sushi! This versatile wine is ready to drink now, but will age beautifully for years to come."
Reg $87.99 . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE 20% OFF . . . $69.99 or Case Price $816 ($68 per bottle)

TOMMASI AMARONE DELLA VALPOLICELLA CLASSICO 2004

Winery Notes: "Produced from the three Valpolicella grape varieties (Corvina Veronese, Rondinella and Molinara) cultivated high on its hillside terraces. The traditional ''pergola veronese'' method of training the vines is utilized, and only the best and most mature clusters are selected for AMARONE. The Tommasi Amarone undergoes a period of aging of at least three years in oak barrels before being placed in bottles for a further period of aging of at least anther year. Warm, ripe on the nose, intense and of great refinement. Taste is complex, smooth, full bodied, characteristic with clear shades of dried grapes."
Reg $71.99 . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE 20% OFF . . . $56.99 or Case Price $683

RIGHETTI AMARONE DELLA VALPOLICELLA CLASSICO CAPITEL DE ROARI 2005

The Wine Spectator 89 points: "This has a fragrant nose, offering compact raisin, citrus peel and flowers, with a lightly polished oak underlay. Full- bodied, with intense, spicy character, firm tannins and a tangy vanilla finish. This intense Amarone needs time to smooth out the rough edges. Best after 2010."-
Reg $44.99 . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE 20% OFF . . . $35.99 or Case Price $479

ZARDINI AMARONE DELLA VALPOLICELLA CLASSICO 2004

Winery Notes: "Dark and thickly extracted, this modern wine offers a wide spectrum of aromas including ripe fruit, cherry preserves, cedar wood, mesquite and cherry liqueur. It embraces a bold, immediate style that is characterized by sweet cherry flavors."
Reg $49.99 . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE 20% OFF . . . $39.99 or Case Price $479

ZENATO VALPOLICELLA SUPERIORE RIPASSA 2007

Winery Notes: "The deep ruby red color of the Ripassa, and the intense yet fine aromas come from the mixture of grapes. It is full bodied, harmonic, and velvety on the palate. Recommended with grilled meat dishes, Ripassa is excellent with rabbit casserole. 2006 Vintage received 93 points from Robert Parker and we feel that this vintage is even better."
Reg $42.99 . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE 20% OFF . . . $33.99 or Case Price $407

ALLEGRINI PALAZZO DELLA TORRE VERONESE 2005

The Wine Advocate: "Allegrini's Palazzo della Torre is often an irresistibly stylish wine, as it is again in 2005. This opulent, generous red is loaded with jammy dark cherries, chocolate, spices and sweet toasted oak. Palazzo delle Torre is a blend of 70% Corvina Veronese, 25% Rondinella and 5% Sangiovese. A portion of the fruit for this wine (30%) is left to air-dry on racks (Amarone-style) until December, when it is fermented and subsequently added to the rest of the wine, which is fermented normally. The addition of the wine from the dried fruit gives Palazzo della Torre an uncommon level of richness, density and complexity. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2011."
Reg $35.99 . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE 45% OFF . . . $19.49 or Case Price $233

NICOLIS TESTAL ROSSO DEL VERONESE 2005

PARADUXX 2005

The Connoisseurs' Guide 91 points: "60% Zinfandel; 32% Cabernet Sauvignon; 6% Merlot; 2% Cabernet Franc. Other varietals may add their voices to this very rich wine, and Cabernet Sauvignon, in particular, brings a firm streak of tannin, but the wine is very much Zinfandel at its heart and is rife with very deep blackberry fruit and vanilla. Full and fleshy in feel, if still a bit astringent on the back end, it is beginning to hint at complexity to come and deserves to be left alone for some three or four more years."
Reg $59.99 . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE 32% OFF . . . $39.99 or Case Price $479
This is a great value and one of the lowest prices you will find anywhere. . .

PARADUXX 2006

The Connoisseurs' Guide 94 points: "64% Zinfandel; 27% Cabernet Sauvignon; 7% Merlot; 2% Cabernet Franc. This deep, impressively extracted version of this perennial CGCW favorite marries well-defined blackberry fruit with a layer of ripe currants, a good dose of sweet oak and touches of milk-chocolate. Its sense of layered richness and it accents of sweet earth speak to classic Napa Valley character, and, thanks to its provenance, its unique mix of grapes and the attention that the Duckhorn folks pay to it, it continues to be a more sophisticated wine than Zinfandel typically yields. "

GOLDENEYE PINOT NOIR 2006

One of the most requested wines from consumers and collectors around the world.
The Wine Enthusiast 91 points: "Very rich, very fine, this Pinot is a blend of Goldeneye's best vineyards. It shows a molten density, like liquid silver, lush in red cherries, licorice, cinnamon, coco, dried herb and orange zest flavors, and should develop in the bottle through 2012."
Reg $57.99 . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE 31% OFF . . . $44.99 or Case Price $528 ($44 per bottle)
We have never sold this wine for under $57.99 (red tag) you are getting a steal at $44.99 or $44 each Case Price.

MIGRATION PINOT NOIR 2006

The Wine Enthusiast 90 points: "A lovely, polished wine, the second label of Goldeneye. It doesn't have the impact of the main wines, but it does share in their structural brilliance. Dry and silky, it has alluring flavors of cherries, cola, mocha and spices. Distinctive, affordable and tasty."
Reg $48.99 . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE 30% OFF . . . $33.99 or Case Price $407

DECOY MERITAGE 2007

Winery Notes: "This vintage of our Decoy Napa Valley Red Wine offers enticing aromatics, sweet red fruit, supple tannins and firm, integrated oak. Beginning with aromas of raspberry, cherry pie, spice and cedar, the blend showcases an array of elements, from flavorful layers of cranberry, red currant and cassis to more nuanced hints of orange peel, amaretto and coffee. The medley of fruit continues throughout a long, enjoyable finish. 43% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, 4% Petit Verdot."
Reg $35.99 . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE 27% OFF . . . $25.99 or Case Price $311

DUCKHORN CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2006

The Wine Spectator 89-91 points: "Supple, harmonious, graceful and polished. Shows a pretty flash of toasty oak, with ripe currant and floral berry and pomegranate fruit that maintains its generous fruity profile on the long finish. The tannins are fine- grained. This is a big, structured wine that will benefit from some age, or at least some air."
Reg $74.99 . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE 20% OFF . . . $59.99 or Case Price $696 ($58 per bottle)

DUCKHORN MERLOT 2006

The Wine Enthusiast 92 points: "Duckhorn has made their reputation on exceptional merlots and the 2006 vintage may be one of their best yet. Its sweet late-summer plum and framboise aromas are spiked hints of fresh-cracked walnuts and curls of sandalwood incense. Take a sip and your mouth fills with bright raspberry and cherry fruit baked into a graham cracker pie crust with extra cinnamon spice. Astringently tannic, as Duckhorn's new red wines tend to be, but very rich, very ripe, and sweet enough in fruit and oak to drink now with a nice steak. Floods the mouth with blackberries, cassic, chocolate, violets, mushu plum sauce, licorice and cedar. Best now through 2012."
Reg $58.99 . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE 20% OFF . . . $47.99 or Case Price $552 ($46 per bottle)

DUCKHORN SAUVIGNON BLANC 2007

The Wine Enthusiast 90 points: "Duckhorn has been remarkably consistent with this bottling, although the price has crept up the last few years. The '07 is right up there, a sweetly oaked, leesy wine whose citrus and lemongrass flavors are fattened up with the pears and figs of Sémillon. The finish is quite dry and rich."
Reg $34.99 . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE 20% OFF . . . $27.99 or Case Price $324 ($27 per bottle)

Michael

What's in Michael's stash today?

2007 Oregon Pinot Noir

2007 was a tough year for Oregon Winemakers. The spring and summer started out great but the harvest was hit hard with an abnormal amount of rain during September and October. This led some wine experts to believe that the 2007 harvest would not turn out to be anything special . . .

. . . We are here to let you know that this is not true. Yes, a significant amount of rain hit the harvest in September and October but this makes it a Winemaker's year where the most experienced artists were able to take the fruit given to them by Mother Nature and craft some outstanding wines. Those that were able to meet the challenge dealt to them by the rain were able to make great wines and those that were not left the wines with something more to be desired. And it is our job to find you those great wines.
After tasting many 2007 Oregon Pinot Noir's we were able to find some great wines that were low in production.

Michael was able to put away a few bottles for his stash . . . just for today . . .

So come in, swirl, sniff, and slurp for yourselves as we have these wines open for tasting while supplies last.

.. . . Enjoy . . .

J. CHRISTOPHER 2007 WILLAMETTE VALLEY
Winery Notes: "Absolutely solid fruit, tannin stucture, and acidity. Ripe blackberries and big bing cherries mix with dense earth to create an irresistable pinot. The layers of complexity build from the first sip. This pinot focuses initally on earthy notes then moves on to fruit notes and finishes with fresh clean acidity. It is absolutely drinking well now and there is no need to cellar it, just drink and enjoy! ."
Reg $39.99 . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE 25% . . . $29.99

A to Z 2007 WILLAMETTE VALLEY
Winery Notes: "Our 2007 A to Z Pinot Noir is true to variety and vintage with bold aromatics and a palate to please. This wine has moderately-deep color and a tannin profile to match. The dark spices on the nose and palate complement the flavors you would expect from a good Oregon Pinot Noir: blackberry, raspberry, black cherry and earth. The oak profile is restrained and the natural acidity from the 2007 vintage gives the wine precision and tautness."
Reg $23.99 . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE 25% OFF . . . $17.99

PONZI 2007 "TAVOLA" WILLAMETTE VALLEY
International Wine Review 91 points:"Light magenta. Aromas of cherry, mushroom, earth, and wet leaves. On the palate, lovely sweet flavors of sour red cherries, pomegranate, violets and licorice. Nice, soft finish with round tannins, high acidity, and long- lasting cherry fruit flavors. Great Value." (04/09) The Tavola Pinot Noir from Ponzi is a blend of LIVE certified sustainable fruit from the winery's Aurora, Madrona and Estate vineyards, along with fruit from Dion, Allora and Gemini vineyards, too. Spicy cherry and maple syrup aromas mingle on this wine's sweet, evocative nose. All that sweetness carries over to the palate, though it's not cloying, just decadent dark cherry and plum notes with fine tannins and good acidity. According to Wine Enthusiast:"Ponzi's Tavola Pinot Noir does a great job of filling in the value end of the winery's lineup. Luisa Ponzi consistently assembles a forward, spicy and appealing wine that drinks well upon release. The 2007 follows right on the heels of the excellent 2006...but with tangy wild berry fruit and refreshing acids."
Reg $32.99 . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE 25% OFF . . . $24.74

SINEANN 2007 "RESONANCE VINEYARD" WILLAMETTE VALLEY
Wine Enthusiast 92 points : "Vintage after vintage, the Resonance Vineyard designation is the most seductive, most expressive of all the Sineann Pinot Noirs. In this difficult vintage it is a more elegant and delicate wine than usual, but delicious. Tart cherry, hints of pine resin, delicate spicy highlights and a persistent and elegant finish are the hallmarks here. Nicely done!"
Reg $58.99 . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE 25% OFF . . . $44.24

WITNESS TREE VINEYARD 2007 WILLAMETTE VALLEY
Winery Notes : "The wine that is really a "snapshot" of our entire vineyard - which ultimately reflects the blending of the flavors and textures produced by the varying soil types, vine ages, clonal- selections and sun-exposures from our 52-acre vineyard. The wine itself is packed with succulent, forward black fruits with just the slightest hint of vanilla and spice. The 2007 season provided us with graceful and spirited Pinot Noir - the kind of beautiful wine that put Oregon on the world map of premier Pinot producers in the 1980's."
Reg $35.99 . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE 25% OFF . . . $26.99

ELK COVE 2007 WILLAMETTE VALLEY
Winery Notes : "All of Elk Cove's delicate Pinot Noir fruit undergoes the same meticulous vineyard management and gentle handling through our gravity flow system, thus achieving the elegance, texture and luscious quality that are the hallmarks of exquisite Pinot Noirs. From the early pioneering days to now, our Willamette Valley Pinot Noir has remained the foundation of Elk Cove Vineyards. This Pinot Noir is blended from several select vineyard sites comprised of Pommard and Dijon plant material and shows the softest, most approachable drinking style Elk Cove makes."
Wine Enthusiast 91 points : "This is a lovely bottle from a vineyard planted in 1974. It's an almost- perfect mix of flower, fruit, and stone. It mixes the flavors elegantly into a wine that captures the elegance of the grape along with bright fruit, crisp acids, and just the right amount of herb."br>Reg $ 32.99. . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE 25% OFF . . . $24.74

KEN WRIGHT CELLERS 2007 "SAVOYA VINEYARDS" WILLAMETTE VALLEY
International Wine Cellar 90 points : "Medium red color. Deep, unforthcoming nose suggests black raspberry and plum, with dark chocolate and licorice qualities accentuating the brooding character. Chewy dark fruit flavors coat the palate, seeming to gain weight with aeration. Finishes with youthful grip and primary dark fruit flavors. I wouldn't go near this for at least four or five years."
Reg $59.99 . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE 25% OFF . . . $44.99

KEN WRIGHT CELLERS 2007 "ABBOTT CLAIM VINEYARDS" WILLAMETTE VALLEY
International Wine Cellar 89 points : "Deep red. Pungent aromas of cherry, dark berries and smoky minerals. A rather brooding style, offering chewy cherry skin and blackcurrant flavors and a late note of cracked pepper. Turned fresher and more energetic with air, finishing with very good cut and cling."
Reg $59.99 . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE 25% OFF . . . $44.99

TORII MOR 2007 WILLAMETTE VALLEY
Winery Notes : "This wine has aromas of dark cherries, graham cracker and earth notes. The flavors show a mix of red and dark cherries, earthiness, and Graham cracker-barrel toast. The crisp acidity opens the taste buds to an explosion of rich flavors: cherries, dried red berries, floral spices and earth notes. The mouthfeel is at first tight, but sweetens up instantly. The finish is long with notes of fruit, oak spices and oak toast. The texture is rich and mouth filling, the after taste shows a little dryness from the tannins and will become creamier with a little more cellaring."
Reg $32.99 . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE 25% OFF . . . $24.74

ANTICA TERRA 2007 WILLAMETTE VALLEY
The Wine Insiders 94 points: "This is a racy wine that will reward those with the patience to indulge in it over the course of an evening. Persistent fruit flavors cradle an intricate mixture of spice and oak - all carried by that luxurious silky texture that Pinot lovers are always on the look out for. This gorgeous Pinot will easily cellar for 5-7 years and provide healthy dividends to the patient soul that is able to show such restraint! "
Reg $ 61.99. . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE 25% OFF . . . $46.49

GROCHAU CELLERS (GC) 2007 WILLAMETTE VALLEY
Winery Notes : "It is said that "wine is made in the vineyard". Because we purchase our grapes from several vineyard sources, we are able to tap into a variety of soils and micro climates. This diversity not only offers us many pieces to the puzzle when it comes to blending our wines, it also gives us consistent quality and style every year. "Hands off" wine making , accentual use of oak and limited extraction are hallmarks of our style. The goal is to make a pinot noir that is elegant, food friendly, and lets the fruits speak for itself."
Reg $30.99 . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE 25% OFF . . . $22.99

PANTHER CREEK 2007 WILLAMETTE VALLEY
Winery Notes : "Bright ruby color, medium body and aromas reminiscent of fresh red fruit dried cherries and cranberries. The wine has a lush, velvety mouthfeel which carries a hint of vanilla balanced with spicy characteristics of nutmeg and allspice. Sturdy tannins and mouthwatering acidity give this wine a backbone and a long, persistent finsh."

FAVORITE WINES OF BEAUJOLAIS

Posted by Admin on Aug 29, 2009 - 01:41 PM
Henry Fessy Brouilly My apologies, wine lovers . . . we should do more Beaujolais.

Beaujolais is the most beautiful wine region in France . . . just south of Burgundy, where Pinot Noir is King . . . in Beaujolais it's rolling hills, sunny, temperate climate, welcoming vignerons . . . when you are in Beaujolais you are in La Belle France.

Gamay is the red grape of Beaujolais . . . a cross between Pinot Noir and a little known white called Gouais . . . it's popularity was assured once the farmers realized that Gamay was easier to grow than Pinot Noir . . . more prolific and an earlier ripener . . . Beaujolais wines are all about fruit . . . hand-harvested and fermented in whole clusters . . . the best are fresh and purple with little tannin but a nice touch of acidity.

Most people think of Beaujolais as the once-a-year Nouveau that comes out in November . . . or the daily drink of millions, Beaujolais-Villages . . . that soft and silky wine that goes down so easy with anything . . . best when served at cool cellar temperature . . . with hard cheese, black olives and a hunk of bread.

But there's more to Beaujolais than that . . . the official Crus (growths) of Beaujolais are located in the rolling hills of northern Beaujolais . . . where the best wines of Beaujolais are produced . . . ten of 'em: Regnie, Brouilly, Cote de Brouilly, Julienas, Fleurie, Morgon, Chiroubles, Saint Amour, Chenas and Moulin-a-Vent.

Henry Fessy has 75 acres planted throughout Beaujolais. His wines are delicious . . . as likable and straight forward as his labels. I've picked my three favorite for you to taste . . . each showing the characteristics of their Cru.

The Brouilly is a subtle wine with plummy, peachy notes . . . the Morgon is more robust with aromas of cherry and kirsch . . . the Moulin-a -Vent is Burgundian-like, a wine you can cellar for several years.

2007 is an excellent vintage . . . a warm, sunny, even growing season . . . an easy harvest with no hail or debilitating storms . . . the crop was pruned back to produce low yields and the best grapes . . . an uninterrupted harvest allowed the grapes to ripen to full maturity.

My favorite, delicious Beaujolais wines . . . open for tasting while they last.

HENRY FESSY BROUILLY 2007
Winery notes: "Ripe raspberries, cassis and crushed grapes culminate on the palate and linger as the lovely structure and bright acidity show through near the finale. Serve with bold cheeses, t-bone steak or ribeyes, barbequed red meat, charcuterie."
Reg 16.99 . . . PEARSON'S PRICE 25% OFF . . . $12.74

HENRY FESSY MORGON 2007
Winery notes: "Sweet black cherries and wild berries coat the palate. Rounded, soft and velvety, the silky, fruit-drien wine is delightfully bright. Serve with roasts, charcuterie, meat dishes with wine sauces, wild game and mushrooms and rich cheeses."
Reg 16.99 . . . PEARSON'S PRICE 25% OFF . . . $12.74

HENRY FESSY MOULIN-A-VENT 2007
Winery notes: "An abundance of strawberries coupled with zingy acidity and backed by firm structure make this wine pleasant in its youth and yet ageworthy. Serve with veal roasts, filet de boeuf en croute, dishes with truffle sauce and wild game."
Reg 17.99 . . . PEARSON'S PRICE 25% OFF . . . $13.49
