Grapes for their wines were selected from some of the oldest vineyards, providing small berries from low yielding vines, situated amongst the best terroirs In Mendoza, giving this wine complexity and grip from the alluvial soil mixed with glacial deposits. From some of the highest altitude vineyards in the world, giving this wine incredible depth of fruit and supple tannin.

GRAYSON CELLARS

Posted by Admin on Aug 14, 2010 - 02:47 PM

Grayson Cellars believes they can put their Napa Valley winery and winemaking skills to work in creating wine of the highest quality at a reasonable price. They believe that decades of Napa winemaking experience allows them to create a better bottle of wine at a better price point than what’s generally in the market today.

When Mike O’Connell and his family started Grayson Cellars they asked the winemaker to search throughout California's finest growing regions for the best grapes. Grayson Cellars specializes in sourcing declassified lots of wine from highly respected wineries, putting together attractive blends. Then they made several small lots of handcrafted wines and gave each a lot number. They continue that tradition today with lot numbers for each wine.

The wines are carefully crafted by Larry Levin, who is among the most experienced winemakers in the Napa Valley. After completing his Enology degree at UC Davis, Larry spent seventeen years at Dry Creek Vineyard where over 18 vintages he produced more than 15 varietal wines. He has since covered the globe by making wine in New Zealand, Chile, and Australia across all price points and styles. For the previous nine years Larry was head of winemaking at Icon Estates where he oversaw the Franciscan, Mt. Veeder, Robert Mondavi, Estancia, Ravenswood, Quintessa and Ruffino brands. Larry also consults for wineries in the Stag’s Leap and Oakville districts in Napa and Sonoma.

Robert Parker of the Wine Advocate recently wrote, “It’s about time Grayson Cellars receives recognition for the extraordinary bargains it is creating. There is a lot of high quality fruit available for buying and turning into wine given the hard economic hit vineyards of California have absorbed, and Grayson Cellars appears to be exploiting that to their advantage as well as to that of consumers. Winemaker Larry Levin is doing some remarkable work here, turning out wines that defy belief given their price points. Kudos to him and the owner of Grayson Cellars.”

Grayson Cellars is a rarity in California today, a family-owned winery that produces small lots of moderately priced wines.

GRAYSON CELLARS CABERNET SAUVIGNON LOT 10 2009
Winery Notes: “The 2009 Grayson Cabernet Sauvignon shows a dark color with deep, rich aromas of ripe, dark cherries, blackberries and hints of black pepper. This full bodied wine provides a round mouth feel with a long, lingering finish of hints of toasted French oak.”

The Wine Advocate 89 points: "Make no mistake about it, this Cabernet will not make old bones and is not one to cellar. Instead, it gives you all its got right up front when you pop and pour now. It's one smooth operator of a Cabernet that keeps folks coming back for more, especially at this price, it tastes like a Cabernet in the $25-40 range. An incredible value, this 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged in 100% French oak, boasts a dark ruby/purple color as well as a big, rich nose of blackberries, medium body, supple tannins, and surprising intensity and length. Just amazing!”

The Wine Advocate 88 points: “Even more remarkable is the 2008 Merlot Lot 6 (3,200 cases). I am not a big fan of California Merlot, but this offering is surprisingly complex. A dark ruby/purple color is followed by notes of white chocolate, black cherries, black currants, and hints of spice and oak. Velvety tannins, medium body, and lots of fruit depth as well as a seductive style result in a wine."

CHARDONNAY DE CHARDONNAY

Posted by Admin on Aug 14, 2010 - 02:45 PM

YES THIS IS A CHARDONNAY FROM CHARDONNAY. INTERESTING, RIGHT? THIS WINE IS FROM THE GREAT LOUIS LATOUR.

This exciting new addition to the Louis Latour portfolio promises to become a classic. It is essentially a "Super Mâcon", with the fruit coming exclusively from the famous village of Chardonnay in the Mâconnais region. Chardonnay vines and Chardonnay's soil conspire to create the most harmonious of whites: the Chardonnay from Chardonnay. Chardonnay, the first village to have planted Chardonnay, continues to this day to produce world-class white Burgundy worth of its name. This unique offering embodies a sense of origin and place.

MAISON LOUIS LATOUR

The family-run company of Maison Louis Latour is one of the most highly-respected négociant-éléveurs in Burgundy. Renowned throughout the world for the quality of its red and white wines, the company has built a reputation for tradition and innovation.

Regarded as one of the traditional négociant-éléveurs, Maison Louis Latour is the producer of some of the finest Burgundian wines but has also pioneered the production of fine wines from outside of the confines of Burgundy.

The Latour family themselves have been viticulteurs since the 17th century, slowly building up a unique Domaine of 50 hectares (125 acres). This Domaine has the largest Grand Cru property in the Cote d'Or with a total of 28,63 hectares (71,58 acres) . The vineyards extend from Chambertin in the north to Chevalier-Montrachet in the south and are solely planted with the two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

The Latour family founded the 'Maison de négoce', an important shipping company, in 1797 and is still based at 18 Rue des Tonneliers in Beaune. The company is unique in Burgundy in that it is still to this day family owned and family run, having passed down from father to son for over ten generations.

LOUIS LATOUR LE CHARDONNAY DE CHARDONNAY 2007
Winery Notes: "With a bouquet full of muscat aromas, the Chardonnay de Chardonnay 2007 reveals beautiful flavours of apricot and green almonds. A bright, straw-colored wine with excellent clarity. A typical Burgundian Chardonnay that offers ripe peaches, pears, apricot and green almonds. Slightly peppery. Lively and round on the palate. On the end there is a nice minerality. A great length. This wine can be enjoyed now or be cellared for a few years."

Although this estate is located in a region known more for producing fine Armagnac brandies, Yves has been dedicated to growing “alternative” varietals and producing some of the freshest white wines to be found anywhere. …Harvest normally takes place during the first part of September, with the wines kept on the lees and stirred regularly (batonnage) until being bottled unfiltered around the first of April each year. GIRARD RUSSIAN RIVER VALLEY 2008
Winery Notes: “To obtain a balanced, food-friendly Chardonnay, we source our fruit from the cooler areas of the Russian River Valley – the majority of our Chardonnay comes from Dutton Ranch. The cooling, marine-layer influences enable our fruit to be picked with a high level of acidity, resulting in a bright, fresh and crisp wine. The French oak aging on our 2008 Russian River Chardonnay, offers up wonderful aromas of vanilla and crème brûlée; blending in with these warm aromas are bright scents of tropical and citrus fruits. On the palate, Meyer lemon, peach and melon are balanced by a creamy texture from sur lie aging. Grapes from the warmer Oakville vineyards give our Chardonnay its distinctive green apple character. Fresh local crab. Chassagne-Montrachet 2007 has a lovely, pale golden color. On the nose, peach, apricot and mango combine with subtle roasted hazelnut notes. The mouth-feel is full and fat with an herbal finale.”

CHATEAU MONTELENA NAPA VALLEY 2007
Winery Notes: “In the glass this wine is reminiscent of California hillsides in summertime, showing a beautiful pale golden straw color. Aromas of orange blossom, citrus rind, and stone fruits of white peach and apricot open the bouquet. Layers of tropical pineapple and starfruit then give way to toasted hazelnuts and a touch of smoke, while the depths of the nose reveal a pleasant minerality. On the palate the clean, soft, full entry builds with layers of tropical fruit, white melon, green apple, and citrus. Excellent weight and acid balance throughout refresh the palate, while subtle notes of oak spice and vanilla linger at the end of the exceptionally long finish.”

Wine Spectator 91 points: "Bright yellow. Musky peach, pear and apple fruit aromas and flavors are complicated by flowers and herbs. Concentration and precise, with a dusty impression of extract and very good length. Quite strong for this no-malo chardonnay. Bo Barrett is now vinifying with a higher percentage of whole clusters and getting less bitterness as a result. 'So now we don't need as much new oak to compensate,' he noted, adding that 2007 was an outstanding vintage for chardonnay as there was no heat stress."

The wine was rich and creamy but clean, with good acids and without the distinct dark toast that seems trendy in Napa Chardonnay. Flavors were several different types of apples, from fresh green apples to slightly baked Pink Ladies, pears, and a touch of citrus. The finish was long.”

SEGHESIO FAMILY VINEYARDS

The Seghesio Story begins in 1886 when Edoardo Seghesio departed his family's vineyards in Piedmonte, Italy for a new life in America. Like so many immigrants, he was drawn to Northern Sonoma County and the Italian Swiss Colony, to follow his passion for winemaking. The "colony," as it was known, hired immigrants for three year stints, providing room and board and then, a lump sum at the end of those three years enabling employees to buy land or set up a business in their new home.

Soon, Edoardo rose through the ranks to winemaker. Yet, he yearned for home. The Colony's manager repeatedly encouraged him to stay and finally, it was his niece and the opportunity to purchase land that convinced Edoardo to remain. That young girl, Angela Vasconi and Edoardo were married in 1893. In 1895, they purchased a modest home in northern Alexander Valley, less for the home than the surrounding 56 acres Edoardo recognized as ideal vineyard land. They planted the "Home Ranch" that year to what has become the family's lifeline - Zinfandel.

From the time of Angela's death until the mid 1970s, the Seghesio Family flourished in the bulk wine business, producing most of the red wine made in Sonoma County. At their largest, 1,700,000 gallons were produced between the original winery in Chianti and the Healdsburg winery. Yet, as the industry evolved, so did the Seghesio family when in 1983, the first wines were bottled under the Seghesio label at the hands of Ted Seghesio, a fourth generation family winemaker.

Ted was the not only the winemaker but sold and delivered wine. In 1986, his cousin Peter Seghesio joined the business and began to set up a distribution network nationwide. By 1993, the Seghesio brand had grown to 130,000 cases of not only the family's zinfandel and Italian varietals, but also Chardonnay, Cabernet, Sauvignon Blanc and both red and white table wine. It was in that year that the younger generation was given control of the winery. Fortunately, they too shared a passion for the land and a desire to produce wines they were passionate about. They turned their focus to the vineyards and eliminated all but the wines we grow reducing production to 30,000 cases.

Today, they are proud to passionately produce almost exclusively estate wines, some from those same vineyards Edoardo and Angela first planted in the late 1800s.

SEGHESIO ARNEIS 2009
LIMITED SUPPLY
Winery Notes: “Arneis originates from the hills of Roero, northwest of Alba in the Piedmonte region of Italy from which our grandfather, Edoardo Seghesio, emigrated in 1886. First noted in Italian records as far back as 1478, Arneis’ production grew as it was often planted among rows of Nebbiolo to lure hungry birds away from the more prized red grapes. Arneis’ literal translation is "little rascal," due to the viticultural challenges it presents in the vineyard.

Tannins and flavors developed slowly without the usual heat spikes, but a very warm September punctuated the vintage by bringing the fruit to full ripeness. Complex, lingering flavors of ripe pears, honeydew melons and green apples. Crisp acidity and bright varietal fruit aromas.”
Reg. $24.99 . . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE . . . $18.74

SEGHESIO PINOT GRIGIO 2009
Winery Notes: “Our family has grown grapes in Sonoma County since 1895 and, in Russian River Valley, since 1961. A decade ago, we began an aggressive move toward producing all estate wines
which included an extensive vineyard-replanting program.

Pinot Grigio is part of that plan to grow intriguing varieties in the best and most appropriate sites. Noted for its unusual grayish/pink clusters and shared lineage with Pinot Noir, Pinot Grigio is well suited to the cooler climate of the Russian River Valley. Richness and textural complexity while maintaining pure, bright varietal essences.Aromas and flavors of ripe apples and quince. Lively citrus character followed by lingering notes of apple and tropical fruit. Try this wine with grilled pork chops with lemon zest, rosemary and black pepper.”
Reg. $24.99 . . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE . . . $18.74

SEGHESIO ZINFANDEL SONOMA 2008
Winery Notes: “Our family roots are firmly planted in Zinfandel, as our
great-grandfather, Edoardo Seghesio, first planted this intriguing varietal on our Alexander Valley Home Ranch in 1895. Today, we share his passion and, reverently, farm over 250 acres of estate Zinfandel in Alexander and Dry Creek Valleys. This wine combines sites that have produced Zinfandel for over a century with newer sites that utilize proprietary clones and the most advanced viticultural practices. Climatic-induced spicy undertones mark the 2008 vintage. Vibrant display of acidity enhances the briary raspberry and blackberry varietal expression. Lush, velvety mouth feel interwoven with fine, integrated tannins creates a smooth richness. Full-bodied, juicy mid-palate with Seghesio "balance."

Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate 89 points: "The 2008 Zinfandel Sonoma offers up copious amounts of blue, red, and black fruits as well as excellent purity, medium to full body, a supple texture, and enough acidity to provide vibrancy. It is a pure, elegant, substantial Zinfandel to drink over the next 3-4 years."
Reg. $29.99 . . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE . . . $22.99

SEGHESIO BARBERA 2008
Winery Notes: “Edoardo Seghesio immigrated to America in 1886 from the Piedmont region of Italy, home to Barbera. In 1895, he planted his first vineyards to grapes he had come to enjoy in his new country; yet one vineyard was saved for varietals from his homeland.

Our Barbera clones were found in that century-old vineyard. Subsequent Barbera plantings on the Home Ranch benefit from northern Alexander Valley’s warm, dry days where the grape’s classic acidity creates a wine with vibrant aromas and a velvety texture. Barbera's dark ruby/purple color is followed by loads of briery, berry fruit, earth, herbs, pepper, and spice. Gutsy and zesty, it is a delicious, medium-bodied red with abundant personality. Enjoy it over the next 3-4 years."
Reg. $33.99 . . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE . . . $25.99

SEGHESIO SANGIOVESE 2007
Winery Notes: “Our grandfather first worked with Sangiovese in the late 1800’s
during his tenure as winemaker at Italian Swiss Colony. In 1910, he planted a Chianti field blend surrounding the railroad station in what was then Chianti, California. Those Sangiovese plantings on our Home Ranch are the oldest in America and provided the rich source of four unique clones for our subsequent plantings of the varietal. Although Sangiovese typically grows vigorously, the low yielding, shallow soils of our Home Ranch, combined with our small-berried clones, produce wines of intense varietal character. “Purity of fruit” core of blackberry/black cherry aromas and flavors.  Fragrant anise spice undertones. Scents of violets and just-tilled earth. Sangiovese’s bright acidity adds succulence Dusty oak and fine tannins provide structure for the fruit to excel. Elegant, round and balanced.”

SEGHESIO HOME RANCH ZINFANDEL 2008
Winery Notes: “In 1893, newlyweds Edoardo and Angela Seghesio purchased their first home in Alexander Valley. As winemaker for the most prominent winery in Sonoma County, Edoardo recognized great vineyard potential surrounding the modest home. In 1895, he planted the "Home Ranch" and began our family's lineage of Sharing Uncommon Ground. Lush boysenberries and blackberries flood the senses – mouthwatering! Briary underbrush spiciness with subtle hints of black pepper. Home Ranch site-specific "graham crust" nuance. Old Vine's prominent acid presence contributes focus Warm climate exposure to the elements provides for well integrated tannin ripeness. Vineyard Designate that consistently produces finely crafted Zinfandel.”
