Newton Vineyards

Founded in 1977, Newton Vineyard is one of the most prestigious estates in California's Napa Valley winegrowing region. One of the most spectacularly beautiful vineyards, high on the lower slopes of Spring Mountain, is Newton Vineyards. Organically farmed and impeccably manicured, this was one of the first outposts to which famed Bordeaux consultant Michel Rolland came, and an entire generation of winemakers formed by his brilliance have emerged from Newton. The overall style of the wine is one built on European elegance and longevity. Ideally situated on the steep hillsides of Spring Mountain, the estate’s Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes develop rich, affirmed flavors with incredible finesse.

At its Carneros vineyard, Newton produces one of Napa Valley’s most renowned Chardonnay wines. Newton Unfiltered Chardonnay, introduced in 1990, is said to be the first unfiltered wine produced and sold in California, and is now regarded as an industry benchmark.

Newton Vineyard was established in 1977, the vision of founders Dr. Su Hua and Peter Newton, who recognized the potential of Spring Mountain as a prime viticultural region and created one of the region's first wineries.

The founding mission of Newton Vineyard is to make wines of purity fully expressing the unique terroir of the mountain estate for red Bordeaux varietals and cool climate, marine-influenced vineyards for Chardonnay. Respect for nature is reflected in all aspects of Newton Vineyard, from the terraced vineyards and organic winery design to the meticulous winemaking practice. The vineyard blocks are interspersed with forested land to maintain a balance with the natural habitat, and the winery itself was built to blend in with the natural surroundings.

The wines are produced on the estate, which totals 560 acres. It is located at an average elevation of 1600 feet on the eastern slopes of Spring Mountain. This is a particularly favored site, since the peak of the mountain shields most of the vineyards from the hottest rays of the afternoon sun. The elevation also brings lower average temperatures and a long exposure to the cooler but equally bright rays of morning sun. This ensures that the vines get all the sunlight they need but none of the baking effect or heat stress that can affect valley floor fruit.

Newton Vineyard's raison d'être is terroir. This sometimes slippery phrase refers to the role of geology, climate and culture in the making of wine - especially soil structure and exposure to sun. Newton's vineyards are planted on deep volcanic free draining soils. The Estate is planted to Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Merlot thrives in rocky soil mixed with clay beneath the surface, while Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot like well-drained, poor soil, and Cabernet Sauvignon does well in stony loam. The mountainous slopes of the vineyards have each of these soils, but also a full range of exposures. Hillside vineyards may be difficult to cultivate and very labor intensive, but the reward is richly flavored fruit.

The finished wines are aged in handcrafted French oak barrels set in caves in the heart of the mountain - reminiscent of those of Champagne.

The outcome of working in tandem with nature is a stable of wines widely regarded as among the best. Each new release is heralded as another expression of the terroir - a fitting tribute to the glorious land that is Newton Vineyard.

Newton Unfiltered Cabernet Sauvignon 2008
This full-bodied and balanced wine exhibits classic Cabernet Sauvignon characters of black currant accented with a touch of herbal complexity and sweet, smoky oak. Aromas of cigar box and white pepper are supported by dense black fruit flavors and herbal notes which linger on the finish.

Wine Advocate 91 Points: The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon reveals more creme de cassis and black currant characteristics along with good acidity, sweet tannin and a Bordeaux Right Bank aromatic and flavor profile. Soft, round and less structured than the vintages of 20 years ago, it should drink nicely for 10-15 years.

Newton Unfiltered Chardonnay 2008
Newton's Unfiltered Chardonnay has a devoted following of wine lovers who appreciate this rich, unfiltered style of wine. Their Chardonnay vineyard in Carneros was planted nearly 30 years ago and this region has since become known for producing superb cool-climate Chardonnay.

The Unfiltered Chardonnay is a light shade of gold. This rich and powerful wine opens with orange blossom, honey, pear, crème brulee, coconut and nutmeg spice aromas. Flavors lead with white peach and pineapple, with a touch of honey and coconut rounding out this full bodied wine. The light citrus finish lingers on the palate. This rich and complex Chardonnay can complement a wide variety of dishes.

Wine Spectator 93 Points: A very distinctive and exotic style that’s well-executed. Ultrarich and creamy, offering a medley of butterscotch, fig, roasted marshmallow and honeysuckle flavors, ending with a lingering finish.

Columbia Crest Horse Heaven Hills

Fashioned after a country French chateau, Columbia Crest is one of the most impressive wineries in the Northwest. Columbia Crest has been making wines in the Horse Heaven Hills since 1983, so it was only fitting that they celebrated their rich heritage in this corner of Washington state with “H3” – an abbreviation for Horse Heaven Hills.

Drawing from decades of winemaking expertise, they've created this tier to be a contemporary interpretation of classic varietals: full-bodied with bright fruit and complex layers of flavor. Bottled with a unique label, H3 wines are an expression of the synergy between heritage and innovation.

Columbia Crest is sits on the Horse Heaven Hills plateau between the Columbia River and Prosser. The Horse Heaven Hills vineyards are noted for their high winds, which decreases foliage on the vines – which results in better sun exposure on the grapes, which allows the grapes to come to full ripeness; and smaller grapes – which results in a higher skin-to-juice ratio, which helps produce more flavorful, extracted red wines.
