Chateau Fuisse
A 15th Century tower flanks Chateau Fuisse, a family home whose history is evidenced by a number of 300 year old artifacts an d adornment. The Chateau Fuisse dates back to 1604 and has been in the Vincent family for five generations. Each generation has added land, increased quality and enhanced the worldwide recognition of the chateau has reached the pinnacle of quality in the region with wines rivaling the more famous appellations of Puligny Montrachet, Chassagne Montrachet and Meursault to the north. Chateau Fuisse is located in the heart of the Puilly-Fuisse vineyards, the flagship AC of the Mâconnais, Southern Burgundy, France. The Vincent family producewines of exceptional quality, thanks to the estate’s privileged and outstanding properties. Currently under the direction of Jean-Jacques Vinent and his son Antoine Chateau Fuisse (5th generation), it perpetuates traditional wine making with carefully applied modern technology. With an integrated viticulture, special care is given to the soil and vines optimizing the concentration and maturation of the hand-picked grapes. Whole bunch pressing is  applied followed by an individualized vinification in accordance to the age of the vines and type of soil. The majority of the estate's 30 hectares of vineyards are located in the districts of Fuissé and Pouilly (the local appellation centre), halfway up the hillsides with a south-south-easterly aspect. The argilo-calcareous soil with its variable proportions of clay and chalk give the wines both structure and elegance. Château Fuissé Pouilly-Fuissé's climats are the the cream of the crop. This estate is an example of premium quality white burgundy flying under the radar.
The estate of Chateau Fuisse includes vines exceeding 60 years of age that are vinified and bottled separately as Vieilles Vignes -a remarkably powerful, intense Chardonnay with aging capability of up to 15 years or more in bottle. The "normal" Chateau Fuisse is also a selection from older vines at least 25 years of age, and as a rule is focused and concentrated, rich yet very firmly held together. From the estate, three suoerstar bottlings come from individual plots or climates: Le Clos, a profound, powerful Chardonnay from the dense clay enclosure behind the chateau; Les Combettes, a superbly aromatic wine of great finesse from a very stony calcareous clay slope; and Les Brules, a south facing slope "burnt" by the sun. All the wines bearing the chateau label are barrel fermented in various oaks.
The chateau owns more than 80 acres, each planted with Chardonnay covering four appellations in Pouilly-Fuissé, Saint Véran, Macon-Villages and Macon-Fuissé. The most famous vineyards of Les Brulees, Les Combettes and Le Clos surround the chateau are bottled as specific cuvées to showcase their unique teroir.
 Chateau Fuisse Tete de Cru Pouilly Fuisse 2009
Chateau Fuissé's Téte de Cru is a blend of over 20 prime vineyard sites throughout the appellation of Pouilly-Fuissé. Plots in Pouilly, with a high limestone proportion, contribute intense perfume yet more delicacy in the mouth. Those in Fuisse, where clay is more prominent, are less aromatic but fuller, more
solid and structured. Vines are an average of 30 years old.

Pappy Van Winkle 18 Year Old?
Today we have something for all you Pappy Van Winkle Fans it is the Jefferson’s Presidential Select 1991 18-Year Old Bourbon.
 This was distilled and bottled during the last years of production at Louisville’s Stitzel-Weller Distillery. Produced by what many consider to be history’s finest bourbon distillery, Stitzel-Weller Distillery was formed by the original "Pappy" Julian Van Winkle Sr of the great Pappy Van Winkle Bourbons. All the Pappy Van Winkle Bourbons were made here till the Distillery closed in 1992.
Once the Distillery closed both Pappy Van Winkle and Jefferson's split the remaining Stitzel-Weller Barrel (The barrels of all Pappy Van Winkle Bourbons). Jefferson's only uses these barrels for their 18 Year Old Presidential Select Bourbon.
So for all you Pappy fans this is largely Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon. The same Bourbon most people now scratch and claw just to get a single bottle of.
Jefferson’s Presidential Select 1991 18 Year Old is a truly superlative offering. Bottled at 94 proof, this ultra-rare, ultra-premium, 18-year-old bourbon is a Collector's Item and Very Limited.
 Trey Zoeller, founder of McLain & Kyne (Owner of the Independent Bottler Jefferson’s Bourbon), comments: “These rare Stitzel-Weller barrels is a coup for bourbon connoisseurs everywhere, who will undoubtedly discover in Jefferson’s Presidential Select a spirit that more than lives up to the fine reputation of its distillery.”
The nose is of big vanillas with full character, citrus, apple, subtle caramel and assorted nuts. The body is huge. English toffee, cinnamon, leather. Balanced and sultry. The finish is long and rounded.
It is a “wheated” bourbon, meaning that wheat is used as a second grain (not rye), resulting in smooth flavors and graceful aging. All of the Van Winkle bourbons are made with corn, wheat, and, barley instead of corn, rye and, barley. And of course this is no different.
Malt Advocate called it a “Classic” and gave it 96 Points: Unlike the standard “small batch” releases, this is from a single barrel: a really good single barrel. There’s less wood getting in the way. It’s softer, more elegant. Lovely fruit, gently sweet (black raspberry jam, blueberry pie), with nougat, creamy vanilla, a sprinkling of cinnamon, and polished leather on the finish. And so drinkable. Classic stuff!
These are known to be the last of the Bourbons that came from the Barrels at Stitzel-Weller Distillery. So once these are gone that may be it folks. This is a Very Limited Bourbon. I would recommend getting it Today and as much as you can! Once we sell out there is no guarantee that we will be able to get any more in.

VRAC Rose Vin de Pays de Mediterranee 2011
If you would like to drink wine with your meal in the same way
that most of the French locals do, look for caves or co-ops with signage indicating vin "en vrac" meaning that the winery or cooperative sells wine direct from the vat; you will be able to buy a very palatable wine for a few euros a litre!
If you want something a but more vin de pays, try VRAC, a wine that takes its label name from the abbreviation for bulk wine storage locations where locals go for their table wine, filling whatever containers they have with the local elixir, then slogging it home to enjoy with whatever version of cassoulet for which their village is know. Again, a blend of Grenache, Clairette Rose, Syrah and undoubtedly Cinsault. It's fun and easy to drink by itself or with summer fare.

Ridge Vineyards
 The history of Ridge Vineyards begins in 1885, when Osea Perrone, a doctor who became a prominent member of San Francisco's Italian community, bought 180 acres near the top of Monte Bello Ridge. He terraced the slopes and planted vineyards; using native limestone, he constructed the Monte Bello Winery, producing the first vintage under that name in 1892. This unique cellar, built into the mountainside on three levels, is Ridge's production facility. At 2600', it is surrounded by the "upper vineyard."
In the 1940s, William Short, a theologian, bought the abandoned winery and vineyard just below the Perrone property; he replanted several parcels to cabernet sauvignon in the late 1940s. From these vines — now the "middle vineyard"— new owners Dave Bennion and his three partners, all Stanford Research Institute engineers, made a quarter-barrel of "estate" cabernet. That Monte Bello Cabernet was among California's finest wines of the era. Its quality and distinctive character, and the wines produced from these same vines in 1960 and '61, convinced the partners to re-bond the winery in time for the 1962 vintage.
The first zinfandel was made in 1964, from a small nineteenth-century vineyard farther down the ridge. This was followed in 1966 by the first Geyserville zinfandel. The founding families reclaimed the Monte Bello terraces, increasing vineyard size from fifteen to forty-five acres. Working on weekends, they made wines of regional character and unprecedented intensity. By 1968, production had increased to just under three thousand cases per year, and in 1969, Paul Draper joined the partnership. A Stanford graduate in philosophy—recently returned from setting up a winery in Chile's coast range—he was a practical winemaker, not an enologist. His knowledge of fine wines and traditional methods complemented the straightforward "hands off" approach pioneered at Ridge. Under his guidance the old Perrone winery (acquired the previous year) was restored, the finest vineyard lands leased or purchased, the consistent quality and international reputation of the wines established. Cabernet and zinfandel account for most of the production; syrah, grenache, carignane, and petite sirah constitute a small percentage. Known primarily for its red wines, Ridge has also made limited amounts of chardonnay since 1962.
Ridge produced its first chardonnay in 1962 from fully-mature vines planted in the late 1940s on the Monte Bello estate vineyard. Production never exceeded ten barrels, and Monte Bello chardonnay was sold principally at the winery. Several great vintages, among them the 1973, ‘74, ‘79, and ‘84, showed that our cool climate and fractured limestone sub-soils were well suited to the varietal. By 1985, the old vines were producing less then a half-ton per acre; the younger ones, planted in the ‘70s, provided the majority of grapes. These newer plantings were on the "lower" vineyard not yet farmed as part of the Monte Bello estate so the wine was called "Santa Cruz Mountains." The vines are long since included in the estate; with this vintage, the name becomes Ridge Estate Chardonnay. In years when differences among lots are sufficient to warrant a separate bottling, they make a limited amount of Monte Bello Chardonnay as well.

Translucent gold color. Fresh tropical fruits layered with apple, pear, melon. Honeysuckle nectar, wet limestone. Cool-climate firm acid. Barrel toast and caramelized apple in finish.

The 2009 Chardonnay Estate is an impeccable, classy wine layered with bright citrus, flowers and just a touch of sweetness from the oak. Crushed rocks and lime peel add complexity on the textured, long finish. In 2009 none of the blocks were designated for the Monte Bello bottling, all of the fruit went into the Estate. This is a stunningly pure wine from Ridge. I came back to the 2009 Estate after having tasted all of the reds and the wine showed beautifully. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2019.

Gravelly Loam, both soils formed from alluvium derived from volcanic rock. The vineyards are planted to a distinct Chardonnay clones.

And to help him is Patrick Leon who has unparalleled experience in making some of the great wines of the world. In 1972, Patrick would join Alexis Lichine & Company in Bordeaux beginning as a purchasing manager for its French wines. Additionally he held positions as a Technical Manager & General Manager of Chateau Lascombes in Margaux. He also worked with Alexis Lichine on developing content for his books.
 These positions went through the mid eighties at which point Patrick would work with Baron phillipe de Rothchild for nearly 20 years. Patrick would serve as a Managing Director, overseeing technical departments including the company’s vineyards and winemaking duties and facilities for Chateau Mouton-Rothschild, d’Armaillhac, Clerc Milon, le Petit Mouton, Aile d’Argent, Opus One in California, Almaviva in Chile, Domaine de Lambert & Barn’ Arques in the Languedoc, Mouton-Cadet in Bordeaux. Patrick’s wide breadth of experience and knowledge has established the foundation to becoming a consulting oenologist and has been instrumental in overseing the winemaking for Chateau d’Esclans while working with Sacha Lichine.
Chateau d’Esclans' is located on an exceptional site, on elevated land near the Gorges de Pennafort, twenty kilometers northwest of the ancient Roman city of Frejus on the Mediterranean coast. The first traces of the chateau's site date back to Gaullist times during which its location served as a lookout point to spot intruders coming by boat into the Gulf of Frejus. The surrounding land around Chateau d’Esclans is known as La Vallee des Esclans (the valley of the clans). At one point the entire area was part of the chateau’s property and over time was gradually parceled out.
The current chateau is inspired by a Tuscan Villa and was built during the 19th century. Its first known proprietors after the deVilleneuves were two brothers, Sauver Louis Ranque and Francois Alexandre Ranque. In January of 1875, the Ranque brothers sold Chateau d’Esclans, then known as Terre d’Esclans, to the inventor of the French Wooden Match, Joseph Toussaint Caussemille whose family owned Chateau d’Esclans until 1955.
Everything is done with quality as the overriding focus. Sacha is very proud to say he takes the same care and attention of his grapes as any of the top Bordeaux chateaux do of theirs, and no expense is spared to ensure every vintages reaches its potential in the bottle. The wines themselves are made by Patrick Leon, who makes these wines with the utmost care just like he did at Chateau Mouton-Rothschild and Opus One.
Chateau d'Esclans has said that it's goal is to 'reinvigorate' the way rose wine is produced, presented and consumed. They are not looki ng to make a good rose wine they are looking to make a great wine period.

The nose is quite intense and very classy with layers of light red cherry, strawberry and cranberry. These red fruits follow through onto the palate, backed up by nice fresh acidity and a clean mineral edge. It's a lovely smooth, long finish and everything about this wine screams quality. It's got complexity, balance and freshness.
Pale salmon in colour, this is delicate and fresh with plenty of crisp strawberry fruit and a long finish. The new benchmark for Provence rose.
