2005 Conterno-Fantino - Barolo Sorì Ginestra

Red | Nebbiolo | Italy | Piedmont | 750ml

Conterno Fantino's 2005 Sori Ginestra demonstrates why Ginestra is justly regarded as one of Piedmont’s top vineyards. The wine is simply beautiful in the way the bouquet melds seamlessly into the fruit, all of which comes together on the building finish, where the typical balsamic and mentholated notes that are often found in this wine make an appearance. The 2005 is a fresh, vibrant Sori Ginestra with notable depth, and while some of the muscle and sheer excitement of the very finest vintages is missing, this is a very pretty, harmonious wine. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2025.

2009 Cos D'Estournel - Les Pagodes De Cos St. Estephe
2009 Cos D'Estournel - Les Pagodes De Cos St. Estephe $89.95 $69.95

Red | Bordeaux | France | Bordeaux | 750ml

The brilliant 2009 Les Pagodes de Cos actually has more Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend than the grand vin (69% versus 65%) in addition to mostly Merlot and a small quantity of Petit Verdot. As powerful as the Cos in terms of alcoholic clout (14.5%), the full-bodied, round, generous Les Pagodes de Cos exhibits lots of creme de cassis and floral notes intermixed with hints of wood/barrique and spice. Juicy, succulent and remarkably fresh and well-delineated, it merits considerable attention from consumers. It should drink well for 15-20 years. Oddly enough, the second wine is superior to many vintages of Cos in the 1960s 1970s and 1980s! Robert Parker 94 Points

Performing considerably better than it did prior to bottling, the 2010 Vieux Telegraphe Chateauneuf du Pape is one of the all-time great Vieux Telegraphes I have tasted in the last 3+ decades. I believe it is even superior to the 2007, which I had several weeks ago. The 2010 boasts a dense purple color along with a sumptuous bouquet of spring flowers, boysenberries, black cherries, black currants, nori (the sushi seaweed wrapper), black olives, licorice and pepper. This full-bodied, meaty, thick, juicy effort possesses a boatload of tannin, but it also has incredible concentration. More massive than I remember from last year, it has put on considerable weight and intensity. Forget it for 3-4 years, and drink it over the following 25-30 years. Kudos to Daniel and Frederic Brunier!

2010 Domaine La Milliere - Châteauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes
2010 Domaine La Milliere - Châteauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes $59.99 $34.95

Red | Chateauneuf du Pape | France | Rhone | 750ml

92

It exhibits a dark ruby/purple color as well as a surprisingly supple style, full body, and pure cassis and black cherry fruit intermixed with hints of Provencal herbs/garrigue, lavender and dusty, loamy soil notes. This round, generous, seductive 2010 is a blend of 60% Grenache and the rest equal parts Syrah, Mourvedre, Cinsault and Counoise from 85- to 105-year-old vines located in the northwestern sector of the appellation. It should drink well for 10-12 years. I am happy to see that proprietor Michel Arnaud has again turned out one of the best value-priced Chateauneuf du Papes of the appellation.?
Wine Advocate (91)

Deep ruby. Sexy red fruit aromas are complicated by garrigue and Asian spices. Refreshingly taut and nervy on the palate, with juicy raspberry and bitter cherry flavors putting on weight with air. The raspberry notes repeats on the long, spice-accented finish. This wine should age well on its balance.

2009 Dunn - Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley
2009 Dunn - Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley $109.95 $69.95

Red | Cabernet Sauvignon | United States | California | 750ml

Dunn's 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley is loaded with blue and black fruit, grilled herbs, asphalt, melted road tar and smoke. A dark, juicy wine, the 2009 is surprisingly open for a young Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon. In this vintage, Dunn's Lake Vineyard, the last parcel on the property to ripen, accounts for nearly 50% of the blend. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2029.?

Randy Dunn's two 2009s are quite different from each other in this vintage, something that isn't always the case. That's good news for Dunn fans, as the 2009 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the estate's few recent releases that won't take ages to be accessible. The Howell Mountain Cabernet is classic Dunn, with maybe just a little more polish than some other recent vintages.

2010 Arnoux - Vacqueyras Cuvee Jean Marie
2010 Arnoux - Vacqueyras Cuvee Jean Marie $27.99 $19.95

Red | Rhone Blend | France | Rhone | 750ml

I loved the 2010 Vacqueyras Jean-Marie Arnoux, which is 70% Grenache, 25% Syrah and 5% Mourvedre aged six months in large wood foudres. It exhibits a dense purple color and a more evolved style than most 2010s, with lots of forest floor, underbrush, spring flowers and blue and black fruits. Dense and luscious with sweet tannin and decent acidity, it should drink well for 5-6 years.

2010 Arnoux - Vacqueyras The Vac $22.99 $15.95

Red | Vacqueyras | France | Rhone | 750ml

For starters, the 2010 Vacqueyras Vac, a blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah, offers lots of exuberant black cherry fruit intermixed with notions of garrigue, pepper and spice box. Medium to full-bodied with good acidity and sweet tannin, it should drink nicely for 5-6 years.

2011 Belle Glos - Clark & Telephone Vineyard Pinot Noir
2011 Belle Glos - Clark & Telephone Vineyard Pinot Noir $59.99 $39.95

Red | Pinot Noir | United States | Santa Maria Valley | 750ml

The 2011 Clark & Telephone is a Cab's lovers Pinot if ever there was one. Established in 1972, the Clark & Telephone Vineyard was planted "own root" to the Martini clone. This heirloom clone of Pinot Noir was one of the first to grace the California coastlands and has become something of a lost treasure. The site offers pronounced flavors that are augmented by the Martini clone, known for its characteristic brown spice (cinnamon, nutmeg and clove) and deep cranberry and raspberry flavors. Throughout the experience a plush weight fills the mouth. The merging of flavors, viscosity and a lively acidity round out the long, sinuous finish.

2009 Château Fombrauge - St.-Emilion
2009 Château Fombrauge - St.-Emilion $49.95 $39.95

Red | Bordeaux | France | Bordeaux | 750ml

92

The 2009 Fombrauge has the potential to be the finest wine ever made at this property. Michel Rolland is the consulting oenologist in the vineyard, which sits in the southern sector of St.-Emilion known as St.-Christophe des Bardes. It was picked very late in 2009, and the result is a powerhouse wine with an inky blue/purple color and the smell of pen ink, acacia flowers, blueberries, black raspberries and cassis. The wine hit 15% natural alcohol, which gives it lots of glycerin as well as a full-bodied intensity, while the low yields of 27 hectoliters per hectare have provided a striking level of concentration and length. This is very serious wine from an estate that is on the upswing. It should benefit from 3-5 years of cellaring and keep for two decades. Fombrauge is the flagship St.-Emilion estate of Bernard Magrez.

900 Cases Produced. Comes from four cool-climate vineyards across the Sonoma Coast appellation: Floodgate, Keefer Ranch, Hirsch and Failla's Estate vineyard. It's hard to believe that this fabulous Pinot is Failla's least expensive selection; what a great indication of his 2011s yet to come and of the vintage in general. It's bone dry and rich in raspberry flavor, with brisk acidity, firm minerality and a perfectly applied jacket of smoky oak. Elegant, pure and savory, it's just beautiful to drink now.

A powerful, direct wine, the 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon hits the palate with a blast of dark cherries, plums, violets and spice box. The tannins remain quite firm, so another few years of cellaring is probably a good idea. I very much like the sense of energy and direction, especially on the finish. The 2009 is 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 7% Petit Verdot, 3% Malbec and 2% Cabernet Franc, from parcels in Stage Coach, Potelle, Veeder Peak, Bosche and Sycamore. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024. This is a super-impressive showing from Freemark Abbey and winemaker Ted Edwards.
