A spectacular effort from this estate rivaling their 2005, but more flashy/flamboyant, this dark ruby/purple wine has a strikingly intense nose of licorice, flowers, plums and dark berries. Medium to full-bodied, very approachable and silky, this suave, very sexy wine can be drunk early on as well as aged for 20+ years.

2009 Château Gazin - Pomerol
2009 Château Gazin - Pomerol $139.95 $99.95

Red | Bordeaux | France | Bordeaux | 750ml

A big, powerful, masculine Pomerol with a style not dissimilar from Le Gay, the dense purple-colored 2009 Gazin exhibits black currant, black cherry liqueur, coffee, roasted herb, an exotic Asian spice component, vanillin, creme caramel and toasty oak in its aromatics and flavors. From a vineyard near Petrus, Le Gay and La Fleur Petrus, it is full-bodied with licorice, earth, truffle and creme de cassis in the mouth. Give this powerful, backward 2009 an additional 6-8 years of cellaring and drink it over the following three decades.

In late 2011, I had the last bottle in my cellar of the 1970 Domaine de Chevalier. Much to my surprise, it was still holding on to life and remained gorgeously complex in that ethereal Graves style. The 2009, one of the finest Domaine de Chevaliers yet produced, reveals a striking bouquet of burning embers, sweet cherry, black and red currant fruit, spice box, cedar and lead pencil shavings. The tannins are sweet in this fleshy, full-bodied offering. It is built on the notion of extraordinary harmony, elegance and complexity. While not the most concentrated or flamboyant 2009, its intense aromas are already reasonably evolved and its lusciousness and balance are terrific. Made from an interesting blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 6% Petit Verdot, its yields of 45 hectoliters per hectare were slightly higher than many of its neighbors achieved. Drink it over the next 25 years.

2009 Fonseca - Vintage Port
2009 Fonseca - Vintage Port $134.99 $99.95

Port | Port | Portugal | 750ml

"The 2009 Fonseca shows consistent notes to its release. It was a small production of 6,300 cases compared to the average of 11,000. It has a quintessential, primal Fonseca bouquet with voluptuous sloes, blackcurrants, kirsch and sweet fig all suffused with glycerin. The palate is succulent on the entry, but the copious nascent black fruit belies the structure underneath. (Indeed, this vintage has the highest anthocyanin count.) This should evolve into a magnificent port. Drink 2035-2050" Wine Advocate (94 Points)

2009 Morlet Family Vineyards - Chardonnay Ma Princesse Russian River Valley
2009 Morlet Family Vineyards - Chardonnay Ma Princesse Russian River Valley $139.99 $99.95

White | Chardonnay | United States | California | 750ml

Produced from 100% old Wente clones, the light gold-colored 2009 Chardonnay Ma Princesse offers beautiful aromas of tangerines, mangos, sweet white currants and quince, a creamy, full-bodied, voluptuous texture and gorgeous acidity. This exceptional group of wines is limited in quantity (from a low of 125 cases to a high of 400+ cases for several of the Chardonnays) cuvees. This is the visionary project of Luc Morlet, a Frenchman who worked for Peter Michael and still consults there with his brother, Nicolas.

2009 Nickel & Nickel - Cabernet Sauvignon Quarry Vineyard Rutherford (Pre-arrival)
2009 Nickel & Nickel - Cabernet Sauvignon Quarry Vineyard Rutherford (Pre-arrival) $119.95 $79.95

Red | Cabernet Sauvignon | United States | California | 750ml

Quarry vineyard is located in Rutherford along the east side of Silverado Trail. Three distinct hillside blocks, each with its own unique soil and exposure, are harvested from this vineyard. The white, rocky loam soils are well drained, and the vines are of moderate vigor. The cooler season of 2009 has created a slightly different fruit profile than the 2008 vintage. Berry fruit flavors integrate perfectly with the wine's natural earth, mineral, herb and tobacco flavors. Thickness on the palate and seductive spice linger from beginning to end. The French oak adds roundness and char, carrying this medley of flavors into a long, supple finish.
2009 Nickel & Nickel - Cabernet Sauvignon Tench Vineyard Oakville
2009 Nickel & Nickel - Cabernet Sauvignon Tench Vineyard Oakville $100.00

Red | Cabernet Sauvignon | United States | California | 750ml

Tench is situated on the eastern edge of Oakville at the base of the Vaca Range next to Screaming Eagle Vineyard. Tench is known for its red clay soil which is covered with deep layer of volcanic rock. The 2009 Tench Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon offers blueberry and boysenberry flavors that harmonize with a background of spice and herb. This wine is elegant and balanced between the juicy fruit and the vanilla from the oak. A coating, velvety texture is expansive and refreshing as the soft, supple tannins carry the flavors into a long finish.

A profusion of aromas - crème de cassis, black cherry coulis, anise, violet, black olive, fresh herb and smoke - spill out of the glass and scent the room. Profoundly deep, complex flavors echo the aroma with firm, well-integrated tannins, vibrant acidity and a long, cocoa-mineral finish.

"Saturated red-ruby. Currant, graphite, wild herbs, cedar and sexy oak on the nose, lifted by a floral topnote. A broad and very elegant midweight (I would not have guessed that it was carrying 15.2% alcohol), with lively cassis and floral flavors burnished by mellow oak tones. Lovely fine-grained, long cabernet with excellent lift. Winemaker Janssens notes that Mondavi will have replanted half of their To Kalon vines over the 2005-2015 period, but they have kept their oldest sauvignon blanc vines, which date back to the 1940s."

International Wine Cellar (94)

"Pure, rich and layered, with tiers of blackberry, wild berry, black licorice and mocha flavors. Impressive for its suppleness, yet this has a firm backbone as well, flexing its tannins on the finish. Best from 2013 through 2023."

"Intensely fruity and dripping with luscious dark cherry, blackberry and blueberry flavors, leading to touches of sandalwood. Medium-grained tannins carry through to the lush, spice and chocolate-filled finish. This shows fine grip and balance, with a very modern feel." Wine Spectator (94 Points)
