The wine is bright purple, deep and dark, with an exotic aroma of crushed berries and fennel. There's a trace of freshly ground black pepper in there too, along with some clove or allspice. Properly ripened Syrah has the most complex aroma of all old-world varieties, I think, and we seem to have captured it here. I like the softness too. It makes for an attractive weight on the tongue, neither heavy nor vapid, with a texture that swallows easily. This one seems to define 'Finish'. 450 Cases Produced

2009 Nickel & Nickel - Cabernet Sauvignon Quarry Vineyard Rutherford (Pre-arrival)
2009 Nickel & Nickel - Cabernet Sauvignon Quarry Vineyard Rutherford (Pre-arrival) $119.95 $79.95

Red | Cabernet Sauvignon | United States | California | 750ml

Quarry vineyard is located in Rutherford along the east side of Silverado Trail. Three distinct hillside blocks, each with its own unique soil and exposure, are harvested from this vineyard. The white, rocky loam soils are well drained, and the vines are of moderate vigor. The cooler season of 2009 has created a slightly different fruit profile than the 2008 vintage. Berry fruit flavors integrate perfectly with the wine's natural earth, mineral, herb and tobacco flavors. Thickness on the palate and seductive spice linger from beginning to end. The French oak adds roundness and char, carrying this medley of flavors into a long, supple finish.

A coating, velvety texture is expansive and refreshing as the soft, supple tannins carry the flavors into a long finish.
2009 Nita - Priorat
2009 Nita - Priorat $34.99 $24.95

Red | Proprietary Red | Spain | Priorat | 750ml

The 2009 Nita is a rare, value-priced Priorat that over-delivers in a big way. This unoaked cuvee, made by Meritxell Palleja from purchased fruit, is a blend of 45% Garnacha, 35% Carinena, with the balance Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. It displays a fragrant bouquet of liquid minerality, lavender, incense, black cherry, and black raspberry. This leads to a concentrated, forward, savory offering with layers of ripe fruit, succulent flavors, good acidity, and excellent freshness. Although it has the stuffing to evolve for several years, it can be approached now. It is a great introduction to the DO of Priorat. Wine Advocate 92 Points

Glass-staining ruby. Raspberry, cherry-cola and spices on the highly fragrant nose. Sweet and supple in texture, with lush red and dark berry flavors, notes of white pepper and violet and no rough edges. Expands on the finish, which features juicy cherry and blackberry qualities. I find this awfully delicious right now but it has the depth to age. International Wine Cellar 91 Points

2009 O'shaughnessy - Howel Mt Cab Sauv 2009
2009 O'shaughnessy - Howel Mt Cab Sauv 2009 $106.99

Red | Cabernet Sauvignon | United States | California | 750ml

"The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is all minerals, graphite and pure Howell Mountain. Layers of dark red fruit come to life in this articulate, pedigreed Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2009 needs another few years in the bottle, but it is already quite striking, especially with some time in the glass. Saline notes frame the long finish. The 2009 is 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Malbec, 5% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, 5% St. Macaire and 2% Cabernet Franc. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2029.

This is a thrilling set of wines from the gregarious Betty O’Shaughnessy and her winemaker Sean Capiaux. The Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon includes a host of other varieties, while the Mount Veeder bottling is 100% Cabernet. Both wines spend 20 months in French oak barrels and are bottled without fining or filtration." Wine Advocate (94+)

The cuvee is composed of different single vinyard productions within the Cote de Beaune area. A pretty, expressive and nicely complex red pinot fruit nose nuanced with both earth and underbrush notes that complement well the detailed, fresh, delicious and solidly detailed light weight flavors that offer better than average persistence. Garnet hue. Quite compact aromas of red cherry and forest floor. Sweet, fresh and pretty flavors of strawberry and raspberry are as approachable as a serious Pinot can be. Quite attractive as it's balanced, precise and offers better depth than the weight would suggest.
2009 Olivier LeFlaive - Les Setilles Bourgogne Blanc
2009 Olivier LeFlaive - Les Setilles Bourgogne Blanc $24.99 $15.95

White | Chardonnay | France | Burgundy | 750ml

Olivier Leflaive "Bourgogne Blanc "les S'tilles" comes from a blend of vineyards in the villages of Puligny-Montrachet (60%) and Meursault (40%).The vineyard, in which Leflaive owns certain parcels, adjoin communal appellations. The calcareous clay vineyards face southeast to south on flatter land. 2009 was a strong vintage in Burgundy and it shows with the quality of the Les Setilles. Meursault dominates the attack right through the mid-palate with rich fruit, honey and the unmistakable aromas of roasted nut which fades to an elegant, clean and pure finish reminiscent of a fine village level Puligny Montrachet. Wonderfully pure Chardonnay nose. Steely and well-focused on the palate, with ample grace, medium body, and good length. The tinge of tropical fruit is a reflection of the extraordinary vintage. A wine of great pleasure.
