Pearson's Notes
Nicolas Catena Zapata is made from a selection of the best lots in the Catena Zapata vineyards. The first Nicolas Catena Zapata was made in 1997, a phenomenal Cabernet Sauvignon vintage in Mendoza. The first vintage was released in 2000 through a series of blind tastings held in the USA and Europe where it was compared to Chateau Latour, Haut Brion, Solaia, Caymus and Opus One. The Nicolas Catena Zapata 1997 came in either first of second in every tasting. This wine is only produced in outstanding vintage years and has received high acclaim from top wine publications and experts. Wine Spectator - 93 points
Wine Advocate - 94 points
Nicolas Catena's flagship wine bears his name. A blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon and 18% Malbec, the 1999 Nicolas Catena Zapata bursts from the glass with spice-laden blackberries. While it does not have the 1997's blockbuster fruit, it reveals huge depth to its graceful, seamless personality. Medium-bodied and satin-textured, this elegant, flavorful wine displays clove-tinged black cherries, jammy blackberries, and hints of licorice whose flavors linger throughout its supple, exceedingly long finish. Projected maturity: now-2015+.
