The 2002 Brut Millesime shows the exuberance and weight for which Bouzy is so well-known. Red berries, flowers and minerals are some of the nuances that are woven together in a rich, expansive fabric of notable class. This really needs some time in the glass to shine, but when the wine opens up it is absolutely glorious. A round, creamy finish has the last word. The 2002 is a bit more forward than most wines in this vintage which makes it approachable now, although I am not sure it is destined to make old bones. This is Lot L08. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2020.

2002 Delamotte - Brut Vintage Blanc De Blancs

Delamotte is one of Champagne's oldest houses. The domaine lies next-door to its sister estate, Salon, which makes one of Champagne's most iconic wines. Both properties are run by General Manager Didier Depond, and the winemaking is overseen by chef de caves Michel Fauconnet. The wines at both properties are made separately, but in years in which Depond and Fauconnet decide to forgo making Salon, that wine is sometimes added to the Delamotte bottlings.

This vintage Blanc de Blancs comes from the C?des Blancs: Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Avize, Oger. The liveliness and freshness of the Chardonnay imparts something quite special to this wine, also endowed with excellent ageing potential. On the nose, a basket of white blossom, apricots and peaches. On the palate, harmonious accents of candied fruit and ripe citrus. Pale yellow in color, this vintage is a festival of aromas, with joyful balance and delicacy.

This Year's Gift Set is Very Limited in Supply but as always is Very High in Demand The 2002 Dom Perignon is at first intensely floral, with perfumed jasmine that dominates the bouquet. With time in the glass the wine gains richness as the flavors turn decidedly riper and almost tropical. Ripe apricots, passion fruit and peaches emerge from this flashy, opulent Dom Perignon. The wine's volume makes it approachable today, but readers in search of more complexity will want to cellar this for at least a few years to allow for some of the baby fat to drop off. Geoffroy describes the vintage as very ripe and adds that some of the Chardonnay showed the ill-effects of the hot growing season in it the somewhat burned, dehydrated fruit that came in that year. This bottle was disgorged in July, 2009. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2032."

74% cabernet sauvignon, 18% merlot and 8% petit verdot Deep, full ruby. Explosively perfumed nose combines black raspberry, violet and dark chocolate. Wonderfully layered and penetrating, with expressive flavors of raspberry, currant, bitter chocolate, spices and tobacco. Still an infant, but already offers a rare combination of sweetness and inner-mouth energy. Finishes very fresh and very long, with big, dusty tannins and great lift. This is high in alcohol for Ridge at 13.3%, but a full degree or more lower than virtually any other collectible California cabernet from this vintage.
