Three-quarters of the grapes for our 2005 Merlot came from vineyards in the Oakville, Rutherford and Calistoga districts of upper Napa Valley, with the balance from the cooler Carneros district. 

Fruit aromas keyed on fresh black cherry, blueberry and plum, with fragrant scents of rose petal, tea-leaf, tobacco and cocoa adding interest and complexity. On the compact, supple palate, vibrant cherry, blackberry and cassis flavors are enlivened by a zesty black-tea spiciness that segues into a long, cocoa-tinged finish.

The 2005 Barolo Prapo is a dark, sensual wine shrouded in a veil of gorgeous fruit. Sweet balsamic notes emerge as the wine sits in the glass, followed by masses of rich dark fruit. The tannins build on the finish in a classic expression of Serralunga yet the wine has more than enough sweetness and density to provide a beautiful foil to the wine's structural components. Rising notes of spices, iron, licorice, menthol and flowers on the close make it impossible to resist a second taste. This is an incredibly well-balanced, powerful Barolo from Ceretto. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2025.

As usual, this superb Pauillac possesses an inky/blue/black color in addition to a big, sweet nose of graphite, charcoal, burning embers, black currant liqueur, and toasty vanillin from new oak casks. Full-bodied with high but sweet, well-integrated tannins, the 2005 Pichon Baron is more backward than the blockbuster 2003 or prodigious 2000. Nevertheless, it is a superb effort whose power, length, and tannic structure suggest it should be at its peak between 2015-2035.

Providing the core of the Hommage is our Palisades Vineyard, located 2.5 miles northwest of the winery. Adding depth and color is Petit Verdot from the Home Ranch, at the winery on the valley floor in Calistoga, with deep and fertile sandy clay‐loam. A small amount of Cabernet Franc from new plantings in Carneros at Mitsuko’s Vineyard on Haire clay loam provides vibrancy.

Conterno Fantino's 2005 Sori Ginestra demonstrates why Ginestra is justly regarded as one of Piedmont’s top vineyards. The wine is simply beautiful in the way the bouquet melds seamlessly into the fruit, all of which comes together on the building finish, where the typical balsamic and mentholated notes that are often found in this wine make an appearance. The 2005 is a fresh, vibrant Sori Ginestra with notable depth, and while some of the muscle and sheer excitement of the very finest vintages is missing, this is a very pretty, harmonious wine. The 2005 Dominus continues to strut its stuff, tasting like a Napa hybrid blend of a St.-Emilion and Pomerol. Its dark ruby/purple-tinged color is followed by notions of cedarwood, spice box, roasted herbs, sweet black cherry and cassis fruit, licorice, and truffles. Full-bodied with excellent fruit intensity, complex aromatics, supple tannins, and a long finish, this 7,000-case blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot should drink well for two decades or more. When I am tasting at Dominus, they always present a wine opened the day before and decanted, and one just opened, and the extended aeration version always seems to be the better example of the wine, so plenty of decanting seems to be in order. 95+
