2005 Axios - Cabernet Sauvignon
2005 Axios - Cabernet Sauvignon $159.99 $109.95

Red | Cabernet | United States | Napa Valley | 750ml

"An example is certainly the 2005 Axios. One-hundred percent Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine is concentrated, still young, but with terrific density, richness, and concentration, although still playing it close to the vest. Opaque purple in color, with plenty of creme de cassis, licorice, and subtle smoke and earth, the wine is full-bodied, beautifully pure and layered, but one can sense that most of the nuances and complexity have still not emerged. This wine is “locked and loaded,” as they say, and 2-3 more years of bottle age will be enormously beneficial for it. It should drink well for two decades. A brilliant success in the vintage!" 2005 Bodegas Muga - Prado Enea - Gran Reserva $69.99 $54.95

Red | Mostly Tempranillo | Spain | Rioja | 750ml

"[...] It has an unashamedly opulent bouquet of primal, ripe, boysenberry, mulberry, dark chocolate and crushed violets that blossom with aeration. The palate is full-bodied with crisp acidity cutting through the pure blackberry and cassis fruit. It has wonderful focus and intensity, though the finish demonstrates convincing composure. This is an outstanding Gran Reserva whose silky texture will instantly win you over. Drink 2013-2030+. [...]" Wine Advocate (95)

2005 Cakebread - Merlot Napa Valley
2005 Cakebread - Merlot Napa Valley $83.99 $59.97

Red | Merlot | United States | California | 750ml

Three-quarters of the grapes for our 2005 Merlot came from vineyards in the Oakville, Rutherford and Calistoga districts of upper Napa Valley, with the balance from the cooler Carneros district.

Fruit aromas keyed on fresh black cherry, blueberry and plum, with fragrant scents of rose petal, tea-leaf, tobacco and cocoa adding interest and complexity. On the compact, supple palate, vibrant cherry, blackberry and cassis flavors are enlivened by a zesty black-tea spiciness that segues into a long, cocoa-tinged finish.

The 2005 Barolo Prapo is a dark, sensual wine shrouded in a veil of gorgeous fruit. Sweet balsamic notes emerge as the wine sits in the glass, followed by masses of rich dark fruit. The tannins build on the finish in a classic expression of Serralunga yet the wine has more than enough sweetness and density to provide a beautiful foil to the wine's structural components. Rising notes of spices, iron, licorice, menthol and flowers on the close make it impossible to resist a second taste. This is an incredibly well-balanced, powerful Barolo from Ceretto. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2025.

#28 Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2008
Black in color, with aromas of orange peel, new leather, currant, berry and Christmas pudding. Full-bodied, with layers of velvety tannins and a long, long finish of fruit and spices. The cashmere texture is all there. 2003 plus 2000 equals 2005.

"Good saturated red-ruby. Deep, ripe, expressive aromas of black raspberry, coffee, mocha, menthol, black olive and chocolate truffle. Sweet, seamless and lush, offering excellent volume in the mouth and considerable early sex appeal. This boasts the exotic character of Haut-Marbuzet in spades. Sweet, long, large-scaled wine with fine-grained tannins arriving very late." Stephen Tanzer International Wine Cellar (92 points)

2005 Château Montrose - St.-Estèphe

"The 2005 Montrose is an exceptionally tannic, broodingly backward offering displaying a dense ruby/purple color along with a provocative perfume of crushed rocks, flowers, cassis, black raspberries, and blueberries. It continues to add weight and richness, good traits considering the substantial, forbiddingly high tannin levels and zesty acidity. If you are over the age of fifty, this backward, powerful wine will probably be more enjoyable to your descendants. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2040+" Wine Advocate (95 Points)

As usual, this superb Pauillac possesses an inky/blue/black color in addition to a big, sweet nose of graphite, charcoal, burning embers, black currant liqueur, and toasty vanillin from new oak casks. Full-bodied with high but sweet, well-integrated tannins, the 2005 Pichon Baron is more backward than the blockbuster 2003 or prodigious 2000. Nevertheless, it is a superb effort whose power, length, and tannic structure suggest it should be at its peak between 2015-2035.

2005 Château Ste.-Colombe - Côtes de Castillon $34.99 $25.95

Red | Proprietary Blend | France | 750ml

A great example of an appellation punching above its weight, from a truly great vintage. 2005 yielded grapes of perfect ripeness so there was wonderful consistency amongst the wines of the region across all price points. This wine exhibits juicy, lush, plummy characteristics, backed by fine-grained tannins, and has surprising complexity on the finish. Try it with grilled lamb or lightgame dishes.

2005 Clos Pegase - Cabernet Sauvignon Hommage Napa Valley
2005 Clos Pegase - Cabernet Sauvignon Hommage Napa Valley $99.95 $79.95

Red | Cabernet Sauvignon | United States | California | 750ml

Masses of pure Cabernet Sauvignon blackcurrant fruit coupled with toasty oak dominate the nose. Rich, concentrated and spicy, the palate of the wine is dense and juicy with great structure and a long finish. This is Napa Cabernet on a grand scale that will develop and improve in the bottle for 5 to 15 years. Providing the core of the Hommage is our Palisades Vineyard, located 2.5 miles northwest of the winery. Adding depth and color is Petit Verdot from the Home Ranch, at the winery on the valley floor in Calistoga, with deep and fertile sandy clay‐loam. A small amount of Cabernet Franc from new plantings in Carneros at Mitsuko’s Vineyard on Haire clay loam provides vibrancy.

Conterno Fantino's 2005 Sori Ginestra demonstrates why Ginestra is justly regarded as one of Piedmont’s top vineyards. The wine is simply beautiful in the way the bouquet melds seamlessly into the fruit, all of which comes together on the building finish, where the typical balsamic and mentholated notes that are often found in this wine make an appearance. The 2005 is a fresh, vibrant Sori Ginestra with notable depth, and while some of the muscle and sheer excitement of the very finest vintages is missing, this is a very pretty, harmonious wine. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2025.

The 2005 Dominus continues to strut its stuff, tasting like a Napa hybrid blend of a St.-Emilion and Pomerol. Its dark ruby/purple-tinged color is followed by notions of cedarwood, spice box, roasted herbs, sweet black cherry and cassis fruit, licorice, and truffles. Full-bodied with excellent fruit intensity, complex aromatics, supple tannins, and a long finish, this 7,000-case blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot should drink well for two decades or more. When I am tasting at Dominus, they always present a wine opened the day before and decanted, and one just opened, and the extended aeration version always seems to be the better example of the wine, so plenty of decanting seems to be in order. 95+

"The 2005 Allende has an opulent, licorice and cured meat-tinged nose that is complex and vibrant. The palate is well-balanced with an attractive edginess on the entry. The tannins are ripe and bold, with the finish packed full of blackberry, raspberry, soy and dried herbs that show fine persistency. Drink 2014-2020+." Wine Advocate (91 Points)

2005 Kenwood - Artist Series Cabernet Sauvignon $67.99 $49.97

Red | Cabernet Sauvignon | United States | California | 750ml

The 2005 Vintage marks the 31st release of Artist Series Cabernet Sauvignon from Kenwood Vineyards. The harvest produced a bountiful crop of Cabernet Sauvignon with a distinctly rich and complex flavor that is followed by spicy and aromatic notes. After picking, the grapes were crushed and fermented in stainless steel tanks and then settled and racked twice before going down to barrels in December of 2005. After 29 months of barrel aging the very best lots were carefully selected and then blended and bottled. After bottling, the wine was aged for an additional year and a half before it was released. The 2005 Artist Series Cabernet Sauvignon is a luscious wine with great depth and focused tannins. It exhibits complex aromas of cassis, tea leaves and a hint of licorice. The wine is ready for enjoyment now but its full-bodied flavor will allow it to improve for many, many years.
