We have just received a second shipment of the Great La Rioja Alta 2001 Reserva Especial Ardanza. This is a Spectacular Old World Rioja wine that is only produced in the greatest years (Only 3 Vintages produced ever) and received 94 points by Wine Advocate. In what La Rioja Alta considers the greatest years (there have been only three to date, 2001, 1973, and 1964) the wine is called Reserva Especial. This is a wine that has the potential to age gracefully for the next three decades. The Bodega was formed in 1890 as a partnership of 5 quality-conscious growers keen to exploit the export potential for well-made, 'modern' Rioja. At this time, French vineyards were ravaged by phylloxera, and connoisseurs were having to look elsewhere for supplies of fine wine. Rioja, with its excellent climate and soils, had already attracted attention, and experiments with Bordeaux-style vinification and barrique-aging were proving very successful. The region's only real disadvantage was its remoteness, cut off from the lucrative markets to the north by the same mountains that ensured its favorable climate. This problem was solved by construction of the rail link to Bilbao, and it is no coincidence that Bodegas La Rioja Alta was established next to the Haro railway station in the same year it opened.
In short the wines are made in the traditional Old World Rioja manner. The company is adamant about not using French oak, keeping the unique Rioja style which has been developed since the end of the 19th century. In spite of the varying amount of time in cask and bottle the wines all display a wonderful rich ruby colour, gorgeous aromas of oak, spices and fruit followed by a sensational feel on the palate, with a wonderful smooth texture, clean rich oaky/fruity flavours and a long lingering finish. Vinification: The winemaking techniques strive to honor the high quality of the terroir, vines and grapes, bringing out the very best in every harvest. All equipment, from the trailers used to transport the grape harvest to the vats themselves, has been carefully selected so that each parcel of land can be worked separately. Olivier Leflaive
Olivier Leflaive decided to create a new renown for the wines of Burgundy with the help of his brother Patrick and his Uncle Vincent. He had one ambitious objective in mind : to apply all the savoir-faire acquired from the Domaine Leflaive to the vinification of various different red and white Burgundy. The wines are vinified, blended, and aged exactly as all premier domaines do. With the help of winemaker Jean-Marc Boillot, Olivier Leflaive produced wines of quality from the outset. In 1988 Franck Grux took over as winemaker and continues in this role today. Over the two decades quality has continued to improve, and Olivier Leflaive has established a reputation as a small négociant of high quality. Leflaive has expanded with the purchase of several vineyards, building up a range of domaine wines alongside the négoce bottlings. Leflaive and Grux have built up long-term relationships with their growers which has no doubt had an effect on the potential quality of the finished wines. The vineyards are harvested entirely by hand. Fermentation is en barrique, followed by malolactic and subsequent batonnage every other week. There is an egg white fining before blending and bottling. Unsurprisingly many of the wines show barrel-ferment notes of butter and cashew nuts, but the use of oak has been judicious and these characteristics are always subtle. Always of great quality, especially when compared to the bottlings of other, much larger, négociants. Each wine is therefore hand-crafted in an individual and personalized approach in order to be sure that the terroir of that particular appellation is requested.

The calcareous clay vineyards face southeast to south on flatter land. Wonderfully pure Chardonnay nose. Steely and well-focused on the palate, with ample grace, medium body, and good length. The tinge of tropical fruit is a reflection of the extraordinary vintage. Beautiful aromas of black and red fruits. Big, modern style Tempranillo but is very well balanced. Even though it is big medium to full-bodied wine there is a certain elegance with nice ripe plums, great spice, some chocolate notes, but also nice smoky and meaty notes on the palate. This wine is half the cost of what it should be. Wine Advocate 90 points: The 2008 Triton is 100% Tinta de Toro sourced from old vines some of which are located outside the boundaries of Toro requiring that the generic DO of Castilla y Leon be utilized. The wine was aged for 15 months in new French oak. Notes of Asian spices, tar, tapenade, violets, blackberry, and blueberry inform the nose of this richly fruity, layered, lengthy offering. There is enough underlying structure to allow for another 2-3 years of development and this superb value can be enjoyed through 2020 if not longer.

Hot, Hot, Hot 90+pt Bordeaux 2009 "Greatest Vintage Ever"- Parker Here are Robert Parker's notes from the new issue of Wine Advocate after re-tasting the 2009 Bordeaux Vintage in late Jan/ early Feb 2012. In short, 2009 is the greatest vintage I have tasted in Bordeaux since 1982, of which it is a modern-day version, but greatly improved. It is more consistent (many châteaux that were making mediocre wine in 1982 are now making brilliant wine) and of course, the yields are lower, the selection process is stricter, and there are any other number of factors, from investments in the wineries to impeccable, radical viticulture, that have resulted in extraordinary raw materials. 1982 Déjà Vu All Over Again – But Greater So has there been careless scoring inflation? Of course not. The same standards that gave what looked to be super conservative and very modest scores 32 years ago, are the same criteria that are in play today. The problem is that 2009 is the greatest vintage I have ever tasted in Bordeaux. I am willing to say it loudly, and stake my reputation on it. In fact, perhaps the most remarkable thing about 2009 is that there is no “buzz.” We are all tired of the newest Vintage of the Century, but when the real one happens, it has to be recognized, and someone has to point it out. That is not called hype, but accountability, fairness, and independent professional reporting. When I first tasted Bordeaux professionally in the late 1970s, there were probably no more than 6-12 great wines, and another 25-50 that could be recommended without hesitation. By the time 1982 was conceived, that had risen to probably three dozen or more truly world-class, great, great wines, and another 75 to 100 that were top-flight, and worthy of readers’ interests. By 1990, this had grown to around 50 to 75 great wines and approximately 200 other top wines. This number continued to soar, and by 2000, there were probably 100-125 great and compelling wines and another 250 to 300 worth buying. By 2009 and 2010, we are in a situation where the wine quality in Bordeaux has eclipsed anything that has ever been done in the past. Some of the old-timers I talked to on this last trip truly feel that 2009 may well go down, when all the dust settles 25 or 50 years from now, as the single greatest vintage ever produced in Bordeaux since records have been kept. That’s a long time. The selection process that goes into making these wines, the investments in the wineries, the extraordinary, concerted effort by entire teams of winery personnel to produce the best wines possible, the practice of culling out the finest lots, and declassifying the rest into either second wines or selling off in bulk, using less SO2 , protecting the wine from bruising with the utilization of what are called “soft techniques” such as movement of wine by neutral gas and gravity, and much less fining and filtration if it all, has resulted in smashingly high quality that has never existed in the past. Take also the radical viticultural techniques that were never used 30 years ago. Christian Moueix was the first, at Petrus, to crop thin in the mid-1980's; now virtually every classified growth crop-thins, prunes for low quantities, and does intensively detailed work in the vineyards such as shoot positioning and selective harvesting based on the different exposures within the vineyard. This has all resulted in irrefutably higher and higher quality, explaining the increase in world class wines from the 1980s through the 1990s, and now through the first decade of the 21st century. Despite the complaints about overpriced Bordeaux, and Bordeaux has lost its soul, Bordeaux wines today offer more diversity, more quality, more aging potential, and offer more different flavors, aromas and characteristics than ever before in its history. Rioja Alta S.A. is unique in its ability to supply large quantities of fully mature wines of world class quality. 
Currently La Rioja Alta owns 300 hectares of vineyards in different parts of the best zones of the Rioja Alta region. The leading grape variety is the Tempranillo with small doses of Mazuelo and Graciano. The Vina Ardanza differs from the other wines with some 25% Garnacha in the blend. After vinification in the new ultra modern vinification plant near Haro, aging is in traditional Bordeaux casks, all made from American oak. Racking is by hand every 6 months with 8 teams working full time racking the 51,000 casks. There is no filtration prior to bottling and further long aging in bottle before release. 
The versatile, affordable, village Chablis from Domaine Christian Moreau Pere et Fils is bright and crisp, with the classic, taut structure and refreshing minerality that define traditional Chablis. This is a Moreau classic!
Olivier Leflaive was working with his uncle, Vincent Leflaive, at the family domaine (Domaine Leflaive). When Vincent passed away in 1993, the firm was passed to his daughter Anne-Claude and Olivier, but in 1984 Olivier subsequently left to concentrate on his eponymous négociant business.
In order to achieve the marketing of a great wine in a village appellation the old burgundian principal of the cuvée ronde has to be applied. The cuvée ronde is the blending of different parcels of vineyards from the same status of appellation, but which complement the overall equilibrium and constitution of the wine and its aromas. Olivier Leflaive and Franck Grux rely on the experience and intuition of their palates in order to preserve their image and reputation at Puligny-Montrachet. Hence, all wines portray the irreplaceable personality of the appelations of Burgundy.
