Weekend Special Offer: Spectacular Old World Rioja 94ptWA The Great La Rioja Alta

It's Back! This weekend we have brought back this Big Time Wine Special for you. We Sold Out of this wine shortly after the newsletter release. We have just received a second shipment of the Great La Rioja Alta 2001 Reserva Especial Ardanza. This is a Spectacular Old World Rioja wine that is only produced in the greatest years (Only 3 Vintages produced ever) and received 94 points by Wine Advocate. Jay Miller of Wine Advocate said: “The current release is the 2001 Reserva Especial, Deeply colored wine with a lovely perfume of cinnamon, lavender, incense, balsamic, and black cherry. Medium-bodied, velvety-textured, and already complex, it will continue to evolve for another 5-10 years and offer a drinking window extending from 2016 to 2036. For those seeking immediate gratification, it has the virtue of being approachable now.”

La Rioja Alta's wines are produced from estate-grown grapes and there are no single vineyard wines. Vina Ardanza’s wines are labeled Reserva with three exceptions. In what La Rioja Alta considers the greatest years (there have been only three to date, 2001, 1973, and 1964) the wine is called Reserva Especial. This is a wine that has the potential to age gracefully for the next three decades.

This is an incredible wine when compared to others in the same price point. This offer is not just a good deal but a genuine bargain. To know you are getting a wine this special at One of the Best Prices Anywhere. This is an offer that is just too good to pass up.

Our Special Offer price this weekend is $26.95. Act fast as we will sell out. This wine is limited.

La Rioja Alta
Few dispute that La Rioja Alta S.A. is the leading quality orientated producer in the Rioja. With more than 50,000 casks and 6.4 million bottles stored at any one time, the equivalent of about 8 years sales, La Rioja Alta S.A. is unique in its ability to supply large quantities of fully mature wines of world class quality.

The Bodega was formed in 1890 as a partnership of 5 quality-conscious growers keen to exploit the export potential for well-made, 'modern' Rioja. At this time, French vineyards were ravaged by phylloxera, and connoisseurs were having to look elsewhere for supplies of fine wine. Rioja, with its excellent climate and soils, had already attracted attention, and experiments with Bordeaux-style vinification and barrique-aging were proving very successful. The region's only real disadvantage was its remoteness, cut off from the lucrative markets to the north by the same mountains that ensured its favorable climate. This problem was solved by construction of the rail link to Bilbao, and it is no coincidence that Bodegas La Rioja Alta was established next to the Haro railway station in the same year it opened.

Currently La Rioja Alta owns 300 hectares of vineyards in different parts of the best zones of the Rioja Alta region. The leading grape variety is the Tempranillo with small doses of Mazuelo and Graciano. The Vina Ardanza differs from the other wines with some 25% Garnacha in the blend. After vinification in the new ultra modern vinification plant near Haro, aging is in traditional Bordeaux casks, all made from American oak. Racking is by hand every 6 months with 8 teams working full time racking the 51,000 casks. There is no filtration prior to bottling and further long aging in bottle before release.

In short the wines are made in the traditional Old World Rioja manner. The company is adamant about not using French oak, keeping the unique Rioja style which has been developed since the end of the 19th century. In spite of the varying amount of time in cask and bottle the wines all display a wonderful rich ruby colour, gorgeous aromas of oak, spices and fruit followed by a sensational feel on the palate, with a wonderful smooth texture, clean rich oaky/fruity flavours and a long lingering finish. All the wines are ready for consumption on release but will keep for many more years in bottle. This situation is almost unique in the world of wine and is the reason why so many restaurants list La Rioja Alta's outstanding range of truly classic Rioja wines.

Christian Moreau
The Moreau family has been rooted in the heart of Chablis since 1814. At that time Jean Joseph Moreau founded the wine-merchant trading firm. In 1974 Hiram Walker acquired 50% of the company and acquired the remaining shares in 1985. J.Moreau et Fils was then sold with no member of the family remaining in the company to Boisset in Nuits St Georges. The Moreau family retained ownership of their vast vineyard holdings throughout these transitions.

With the 2002 vintage, Christian Moreau Pere & Fils regained their right to produce wines sourced from their extensive vineyard holdings and market the wines under their own label. Today, Fabien Moreau the sixtieth generation of the family is the super star winemaker of this beautiful Domaine in Chablis. After graduating in Oenology in Dijon and earning a MBA at E.N.I.T.A in Bordeaux, he also studied in New Zealand and learned the country’s winemaking practices.

Christian Moreau Chablis 2010

The versatile, affordable, village Chablis from Domaine Christian Moreau Pere et Fils is bright and crisp, with the classic, taut structure and refreshing minerality that define traditional Chablis. This is a Moreau classic!

Vinification: The winemaking techniques strive to honor the high quality of the terroir, vines and grapes, bringing out the very best in every harvest.

All equipment, from the trailers used to transport the grape harvest to the vats themselves, has been carefully selected so that each parcel of land can be worked separately. All harvesting is done exclusively by hand from the Petit Chablis up to the Grands Crus.

Wine Advocate 88-90 Points: The 2010 Chablis is a beautiful, pure wine graced with considerable energy and verve in its bright fruit and long, wiry finish. With time in the glass, the wine’s pedigree and class begin to emerge. The Chablis is a highly promising wine at this level. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2018.

Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar 90 Points: Good bright lemon-yellow. Pure aromas of lemon drop, tangerine, grapefruit and mint. High-pitched and intense in the mouth, with a captivating sweetness nicely buffered by firm acidity and a crushed stone quality. Finishes with excellent energy and length. This should make an excellent village wine.

New Everyday Specials: Leflaive, Rio Madre, & Triton

We were able to work out some great deals where we are able to bring you great everyday prices on these fabulous wines. We have for you 2009 Olivier Leflaive Les Setille, 2010 Rio Madre Rioja, and 2008 Bodeagas Triton. These are all current vintages as new releases are not expected to arrive for at least 3-4 months. While you wait enjoy these wines now while they last.

Burgundy's Best Kept Secret Olivier Leflaive Les Setilles Blend of Puligny and Mersault $15.95/ $14.95 case price

This is not just any Bourgogne Blanc, this is Premier Burgundy Producer Olivier Leflaive’s closely guarded secret blend from prime vineyards in Puligny and Meursault. The resulting wine is the perfect progeny, melding seamlessly Meursault’s fleshy fruit, plump fresh nuts and creamy textures with the driving minerally energy and jasmine scent of Puligny. Exceptional wine, extraordinary value, one of burgundy’s best kept secrets. This wine easily should be 2 or 3 times the price.

Olivier Leflaive

Olivier Leflaive was working with his uncle, Vincent Leflaive, at the family domaine (Domaine Leflaive). When Vincent passed away in 1993, the firm was passed to his daughter Anne-Claude and Olivier, but in 1984 Olivier subsequently left to concentrate on his eponymous négociant business.

Olivier Leflaive decided to create a new renown for the wines of Burgundy with the help of his brother Patrick and his Uncle Vincent. He had one ambitious objective in mind : to apply all the savoir-faire acquired from the Domaine Leflaive to the vinification of various different red and white Burgundy. The wines are vinified, blended, and aged exactly as all premier domaines do.

With the help of winemaker Jean-Marc Boillot, Olivier Leflaive produced wines of quality from the outset. In 1988 Franck Grux took over as winemaker and continues in this role today. Over the two decades quality has continued to improve, and Olivier Leflaive has established a reputation as a small négociant of high quality. Leflaive has expanded with the purchase of several vineyards, building up a range of domaine wines alongside the négoce bottlings.

Leflaive and Grux have built up long-term relationships with their growers which has no doubt had an effect on the potential quality of the finished wines. The vineyards are harvested entirely by hand. Fermentation is en barrique, followed by malolactic and subsequent batonnage every other week. There is an egg white fining before blending and bottling. Unsurprisingly many of the wines show barrel-ferment notes of butter and cashew nuts, but the use of oak has been judicious and these characteristics are always subtle. Always of great quality, especially when compared to the bottlings of other, much larger, négociants.

Each wine is therefore hand-crafted in an individual and personalized approach in order to be sure that the terroir of that particular appellation is requested.

In order to achieve the marketing of a great wine in a village appellation the old burgundian principal of the cuvée ronde has to be applied. The cuvée ronde is the blending of different parcels of vineyards from the same status of appellation, but which complement the overall equilibrium and constitution of the wine and its aromas. Olivier Leflaive and Franck Grux rely on the experience and intuition of their palates in order to preserve their image and reputation at Puligny-Montrachet. Hence, all wines portray the irreplaceable personality of the appelations of Burgundy.

Olivier Leflaive “Bourgogne Blanc "les Sétilles" comes from a blend of vineyards in the villages of Puligny-Montrachet (60%) and Meursault (40%).The vineyard, in which Leflaive owns certain parcels, adjoin communal appellations. The calcareous clay vineyards face southeast to south on flatter land. Meursault dominates the attack right through the mid-palate with rich fruit, honey and the unmistakable aromas of roasted nut which fades to an elegant, clean and pure finish reminiscent of a fine village level Puligny Montrachet. Wonderfully pure Chardonnay nose. Steely and well-focused on the palate, with ample grace, medium body, and good length. The tinge of tropical fruit is a reflection of the extraordinary vintage. A wine of great pleasure.

Josh Reynolds from Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar rated this wine 90 points and said:
"(100% Graciano): Glass-staining purple. Highly aromatic bouquet offers dark berry and cherry compote scents along with spicecake and licorice. Chewy tannins firm and focus the wine's deep bitter cherry and cassis flavors, which are complemented by notes of cracked pepper and spices. Finishes with building sweetness, an echo of licorice and impressive persistence, especially for a wine at this price."

Take advantage of these Special Offers as it is for a Limited Time Only. Special Case Price Offer Ends January 20, 2012. Our regular price on this wine is $15.99. Get it now and save. We will not be able to honor special prices after the offer ends.

Rio Madre Rioja 2010
Rio Madre is an innovative young winery in Rioja Baja where the river Ebro flattens out under the old Roman bridge.

The Graciano grape has long been fundamental to the wine industry in Rioja. Winemakers depend on it to add a wonderful floral bouquet and complexity to their blends. Rarely has it been used on its own. Several years ago Escudero family noticed that the estate grown Graciano vineyards, which surround the town of Alfaro, were capable of producing a wine which exemplifies the best that the grape has to offer. The deep, almost opaque color, the exuberant aromas and luscious flavors of blackberries and cherries tell you this is not a wine to be taken lightly but rather it should be enjoyed to its fullest. This dark, robust red shows real Rioja character.

We were the first to Release this Blockbuster wine to you and now we have it at a Spectacular everyday price of $14.95/ $13.95 case price

Bodegas Triton 2008

This is a blockbuster wine from winemaker Amy Hopkinson and importer Jorge Ordonez. Made of 100% Tinta de Toro (Also known as Tempranillo). The winery is located in the village of Villanueva de Campean near Zamora in the historic area known as de la Tierra del Vino, The Land of Wine. And also near the appellation of Toro. The estate is being farmed using organic and biodynamic practices, and the old vines for this wine range in age from 45-104 years from 1904-1965. Soils are a nice mixture with a lot of sand and river rocks, and sun strata red clay typical for Toro. Triton has also been aged in French oak for 15 months.

Beautiful aromas of black and red fruits. Big, modern style Tempranillo but is very well balanced. Even though it is big medium to full-bodied wine there is a certain elegance with nice ripe plums, great spice, some chocolate notes, but also nice smoky and meaty notes on the palate. This wine is half the cost of what it should be.

Wine Advocate 90 points: The 2008 Triton is 100% Tinta de Toro sourced from old vines some of which are located outside the boundaries of Toro requiring that the generic DO of Castilla y Leon be utilized. The wine was aged for 15 months in new French oak. Notes of Asian spices, tar, tapenade, violets, blackberry, and blueberry inform the nose of this richly fruity, layered, lengthy offering. There is enough underlying structure to allow for another 2-3 years of development and this superb value can be enjoyed through 2020 if not longer.

Stephen Tanzer 90 points: Glass-staining ruby. Sexy scents of cherry-vanilla, mulberry and oak spices. Lush and creamy on entry, then firmer in the middle, offering juicy, penetrating dark fruit flavors that show very good depth. In a modern, oaky style, with very good closing thrust and length.

Limited Private Edition Glenmorangie Artein Sassicaia Cask

Glenmorangie Artein is an exciting new addition which joins the ongoing Private Edition range, comprising so far of the highly esteemed Sonnalta PX and Finealta. Artein is the latest Private Edition from Glenmorangie. These are rare, limited-edition whiskies selected from the "cabinet of curiosities" of Dr. Lumsden. Released annually, Glenmorangie has completely sold out of the last two editions in rapid fashion.

Whisky connoisseurs who have tasted it are already calling the Glenmorangie Artein one the best whiskies from this storied house ever produced.

Of course, it's nothing new to look to

different sources for a cask, but one should never doubt Dr. Bill Lumsden, the head of distilling and whisky creation at Glenmorangie, and a real pioneer when it comes to innovation and wood management. Choosing casks from the iconic Super-Tuscan Sassicaia was a truly inspired way to finish the blend of already superb 15 year and 21 year old whiskies. The spirit started its maturation in Americ

an white oak ex-bourbon casks before individually spending a period of extra maturation in Sassicaia Super Tuscan wine casks. The rugged Tuscan coastal hills, built on stony foundations, are a seemingly improbable area for vineyards. However, the stones play an important role in the development of these fine wines. The vines are forced to delve deep into the soil seeking nourishment; as a result the grapes claim intense flavour from this unique terroir.

Dr. Lumsden said "Wine is one of my huge passions and I was fascinated by the

GLENMORANGIE Arteinrole the stony ground played in the flavor profile of the famous Super-Tuscan wines. I was inspired to experimentwith extra maturing Glenmorangie in these wine casks and was thrilled with the result a rich, outstandingly fragrant whisky quite literally born of stone."

On the nose Glenmorangie Artein recalls a sweet and heady bouquet of ripe red berries, honeysuckle and fresh mint. On the palate, sun soaked baked fruits such as ripe apricots, peaches and plums harmonise gracefully with hints of spearmint and cherries in milk chocolate. A whisky of great length, Glenmorangie Artein finishes with high notes of zesty, lemon sherbet and a flourish of creamy cappuccino.

Hot, Hot, Hot 90+pt Bordeaux 2009 "Greatest Vintage Ever"- Parker

2009 Bordeaux have caught fire and we are running low on inventory of wines. But of course we still have some available for you to get today but don't wait. After re-tasting the 2009 Bordeaux Vintage Robert Parker said "2009 is the greatest vintage I have ever tasted in Bordeaux. I am willing to say it loudly, and stake my reputation on it."

Here are Robert Parker's notes from the new issue of Wine Advocate after re-tasting the 2009 Bordeaux Vintage in late Jan/ early Feb 2012.

In short, 2009 is the greatest vintage I have tasted in Bordeaux since 1982, of which it is a modern-day version, but greatly improved. It is more consistent (many châteaux that were making mediocre wine in 1982 are now making brilliant wine) and of course, the yields are lower, the selection process is stricter, and there are any other number of factors, from investments in the wineries to impeccable, radical viticulture, that have resulted in extraordinary raw materials.

1982 Déjà Vu All Over Again – But Greater
The one thing about these wines that I love is that the window of drinkability will be enormous. Just like in 1990 or 1982, the low acidity, the very ripe fruit, the high glycerin levels from the elevated alcohols, and the stunning concentration and fruit from low yields will give most of these wines incredible appeal in their youth, but at the same time will guarantee that the top wines last for 30 or more years, as the best 1982's have certainly done. I do want to reiterate that for as big, rich, and as high in alcohol as the 2009's are, they are remarkably pure, well-delineated and surprisingly fresh and vibrant – a paradox, but a wonderful one at that.

So has there been careless scoring inflation? Of course not. The same standards that gave what looked to be super conservative and very modest scores 32 years ago, are the same criteria that are in play today. The problem is that 2009 is the greatest vintage I have ever tasted in Bordeaux. I am willing to say it loudly, and stake my reputation on it. In fact, perhaps the most remarkable thing about 2009 is that there is no “buzz.” We are all tired of the newest Vintage of the Century, but when the real one happens, it has to be recognized, and someone has to point it out. That is not called hype, but accountability, fairness, and independent professional reporting.

When I first tasted Bordeaux professionally in the late 1970s, there were probably no more than 6-12 great wines, and another 25-50 that could be recommended without hesitation. By the time 1982 was conceived, that had risen to probably three dozen or more truly world-class, great, great wines, and another 75 to 100 that were top-flight, and worthy of readers’ interests. By 1990, this had grown to around 50 to 75 great wines and approximately 200 other top wines. This number continued to soar, and by 2000, there were probably 100-125 great and compelling wines and another 250 to 300 worth buying. By 2009 and 2010, we are in a situation where the wine quality in Bordeaux has eclipsed anything that has ever been done in the past. Some of the old-timers I talked to on this last trip truly feel that 2009 may well go down, when all the dust settles 25 or 50 years from now, as the single greatest vintage ever produced in Bordeaux since records have been kept. That’s a long time. The selection process that goes into making these wines, the investments in the wineries, the extraordinary, concerted effort by entire teams of winery personnel to produce the best wines possible, the practice of culling out the finest lots, and declassifying the rest into either second wines or selling off in bulk, using less SO2 , protecting the wine from bruising with the utilization of what are called “soft techniques” such as movement of wine by neutral gas and gravity, and much less fining and filtration if it all, has resulted in smashingly high quality that has never existed in the past. Take also the radical viticultural techniques that were never used 30 years ago. Christian Moueix was the first, at Petrus, to crop thin in the mid-1980's; now virtually every classified growth crop-thins, prunes for low quantities, and does intensively detailed work in the vineyards such as shoot positioning and selective harvesting based on the different exposures within the vineyard. This has all resulted in irrefutably higher and higher quality, explaining the increase in world class wines from the 1980s through the 1990s, and now through the first decade of the 21st century. Despite the complaints about overpriced Bordeaux, and Bordeaux has lost its soul, Bordeaux wines today offer more diversity, more quality, more aging potential, and offer more different flavors, aromas and characteristics than ever before in its history. This is an irrefutable fact.

Don't Forget about the 2010 Bordeaux Futures
One thing I learned from the 2009 Vintage is that Bordeaux wines are still alive and well. As a collector or investor you would have still been able to save or make 20-30% on wines if you were to purchase 2009 Bordeaux during futures. As you know 2009 and 2010 may go down as two of the Best Vintages Ever in Bordeaux.  Well worth the hype. The 2009 wines are running out but here is your chance to get the 2010 Bordeaux Futures now and save.
