Breggo Cellars
Breggo Cellars produces aromatic white wines and Pinot Noir from sources throughout the cool Anderson Valley of Mendocino, including our own Savoy Vineyard, and the true Sonoma Coast. Drawing parallels with Burgundy's Corton AOC, the Savoy Vineyard is recognized as one of the premier Pinot Noir vineyards in California. Spread over 44 acres, it is made up of 34 sub-blocks which are each managed individually to maximize quality. Breggo’s wines celebrate their cool climate sources and articulate a tension between acidity and texture. classic hallmarks of Anderson Valley Pinot Noir – an intense aromatic core of black cherry and pomegranate with more subtle notes of forest floor and wild sage. The palate is a lovely blend of sweet black fruits and spicy toast that build on the elegantly defined tannins to give a supple mouthfeel and rewarding finish.
A benchmark Anderson Valley vineyard, Breggo Cellars acquired the Savoy Vineyard in April 2011. Planted by Richard Savoy in 1991, the vineyard is located very close to the valley’s mid-point, just west of the town of Philo.

Rich Savoy first purchased a homestead high above Boonville in in 1984 and began planting his small parcel with grapes. At the time, the valley had just a handful of vineyards, but Rich’s passion for Pinot Noir led him to this remote place. It was not the first time Rich Savoy built a business around a passion, as a 25 year old in 1967, Rich opened the acclaimed Green Apple bookstore in San Francisco’s Richmond District.

Rich soon began to look for a larger vineyard site near the valley floor. The cool nights and pleasantly warm summer days around the Philo area intrigued him, and knew he had struck gold with the gently sloping southwest facing pasture near the junction of Gowan Creek and the Navarro River. With much work, the ground was prepared, drainage installed, and a pond built. The first vines of Savoy Vineyard went into the ground in 1991 with additional acreage added every few years throughout the 90s.

Since the sale of the Philo vineyard in the spring of 2011, Rich Savoy continues to advise on the farming of the vineyard and his involvement in the property is highly valued. The vineyard is planted to a diverse blend of Dijon and Heritage clones of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Spread over 44 acres, the vineyard is made up of 34 sub-blocks which are each managed individually to maximize quality. Breggo continues to sell fruit from Savoy to many of the highly esteemed wineries that helped build the vineyard’s reputation, including Littorai and Radio Coteau, as well as to some newcomers like Kutch, Auteur, and Peay.

Breggo Chardonnay Anderson Valley 2011
Wine Enthusiast 91 Points:

624 Cases Produced. This is a cool-climate Chardonnay that’s dark gold in color and tastes of ripe apple. From both the Ferrington and Savoy Vineyards, two of Anderson Valley’s finest, it shows the greatness of the vintage in coastal Mendocino. Fragrant and rich in honey and toasty notes, it finishes crisp. Crab cakes with it would be ideal.
