2009 Château Brane-Cantenac - Margaux
2009 Château Brane-Cantenac - Margaux

Red | Bordeaux | France | 750ml

92

A spectacular effort from this estate rivaling their 2005, but more flashy/flamboyant, this dark ruby/purple wine has a strikingly intense nose of licorice, flowers, plums and dark berries. Medium to full-bodied, very approachable and silky, this suave, very sexy wine can be drunk early on as well as aged for 20+ years.

2009 Château Gazin - Pomerol
2009 Château Gazin - Pomerol

Red | Bordeaux | France | Bordeaux | 750ml

93

A big, powerful, masculine Pomerol with a style not dissimilar from Le Gay, the dense purple-colored 2009 Gazin exhibits black currant, black cherry liqueur, coffee, roasted herb, an exotic Asian spice component, vanillin, creme caramel and toasty oak in its aromatics and flavors. From a vineyard near Petrus, Le Gay and La Fleur Petrus, it is full-bodied with licorice, earth, truffle and creme de cassis in the mouth. Give this powerful, backward 2009 an additional 6-8 years of cellaring and drink it over the following three decades.

2009 Cos D'Estournel - Les Pagodes De Cos St. Estephe
2009 Cos D'Estournel - Les Pagodes De Cos St. Estephe

Red | Bordeaux | France | Bordeaux | 750ml

91

The brilliant 2009 Les Pagodes de Cos actually has more Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend than the grand vin (69% versus 65%) in addition to mostly Merlot and a small quantity of Petit Verdot. As powerful as the Cos in terms of alcoholic clout (14.5%), the full-bodied, round, generous Les Pagodes de Cos exhibits lots of creme de cassis and floral notes intermixed with hints of wood/barrique and spice. Juicy, succulent and remarkably fresh and well-delineated, it merits considerable attention from consumers. It should drink well for 15-20 years. Oddly enough, the second wine is superior to many vintages of Cos in the 1960s 1970s and 1980s! Robert Parker 94 Points

A less forthcoming but similar nose that is trimmed in discreet oak treatment marries into richer yet more detailed middle weight flavors that are admirably fresh and pure before culminating in a palate staining, balanced and driving finish of striking length, excellent purity and moderate austerity. This is a big and robust Valmur that should make for a really lovely wine in a few years.?300 cases imported.

2009 Dunn - Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley
2009 Dunn - Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley

Red | Cabernet Sauvignon | United States | California | 750ml

91

Dunn's 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley is loaded with blue and black fruit, grilled herbs, asphalt, melted road tar and smoke. A dark, juicy wine, the 2009 is surprisingly open for a young Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon. In this vintage, Dunn's Lake Vineyard, the last parcel on the property to ripen, accounts for nearly 50% of the blend. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2029.

Randy Dunn's two 2009s are quite different from each other in this vintage, something that isn't always the case. That's good news for Dunn fans, as the 2009 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the estate's few recent releases that won't take ages to be accessible. The Howell Mountain Cabernet is classic Dunn, with maybe just a little more polish than some other recent vintages. Wine Advocate 92 Points

2009 Fonseca - Vintage Port
2009 Fonseca - Vintage Port

Port | Port | Portugal | 750ml

"The 2009 Fonseca shows consistent notes to its release. It was a small production of 6,300 cases compared to the average of 11,000. It has a quintessential, primal Fonseca bouquet with voluptuous sloes, blackcurrants, kirsch and sweet fig all suffused with glycerin. The palate is succulent on the entry, but the copious nascent black fruit belies the structure underneath. (Indeed, this vintage has the highest anthocyanin count.) This should evolve into a magnificent port. Drink 2035-2050" Wine Advocate (94 Points)

2009 Nickel & Nickel - Cabernet Sauvignon Quarry Vineyard Rutherford (Pre-arrival)
2009 Nickel & Nickel - Cabernet Sauvignon Quarry Vineyard Rutherford (Pre-arrival)

Red | Cabernet Sauvignon | United States | California | 750ml

Quarry vineyard is located in Rutherford along the east side of Silverado Trail. Three distinct hillside blocks, each with its own unique soil and exposure, are harvested from this vineyard. The white, rocky loam soils are well drained, and the vines are of moderate vigor. The cooler season of 2009 has created a slightly different fruit profile than the 2008 vintage. Berry fruit flavors integrate perfectly with the wine's natural earth, mineral, herb and tobacco flavors. Thickness on the palate and seductive spice linger from beginning to end. The French oak adds roundness and char, carrying this medley of flavors into a long, supple finish.

2009 O'shaughnessy - Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mt
2009 O'shaughnessy - Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mt

Red | Cabernet Sauvignon | United States | California | 750ml

"The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is all minerals, graphite and pure Howell Mountain. Layers of dark red fruit come to life in this articulate, pedigreed Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2009 needs another few years in the bottle, but it is already quite striking, especially with some time in the glass. Saline notes frame the long finish. The 2009 is 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Malbec, 5% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, 5% St. Macaire and 2% Cabernet Franc. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2029.

This is a thrilling set of wines from the gregarious Betty O’Shaughnessy and her winemaker Sean Capiaux. The Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon includes a host of other varieties, while the Mount Veeder bottling is 100% Cabernet. Both wines spend 20 months in French oak barrels and are bottled without fining or filtration." Wine Advocate 94+ Points

"Mondavi’s 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is sumptuous and beautiful. Plums, mocha, cloves and pencil shavings are all woven together in this gorgeous, large-scaled Cabernet Sauvignon. All the elements are in the right place. Silky, nuanced tannins frame the voluptuous, caressing finish. A wine of centeredness and gorgeous precision, the 2009 is a true standout. The tannins need a few years to soften, but once that starts to happen, the 2009 should enjoy a long life. The blend is 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2029. Antonio Galloni/ Vinous 94 Points

"Saturated red-ruby. Currant, graphite, wild herbs, cedar and sexy oak on the nose, lifted by a floral topnote. A broad and very elegant midweight (I would not have guessed that it was carrying 15.2% alcohol), with lively cassis and floral flavors burnished by mellow oak tones. Lovely fine-grained, long cabernet with excellent lift. Winemaker Janssens notes that Mondavi will have replanted half of their To Kalon vines over the 2005-2015 period, but they have kept their oldest sauvignon blanc vines, which date back to the 1940s."International Wine Cellar 94 Points

"Intense essence of summer and autumn fruit on the nose with black cherry in there as well. Great acidity and lovely round tannins. Wonderful, silky mouthfeel, with sweet, supple, ripe fruit that’s not cloying or overdone. Top shelf." Decanter 93 Points

"Pure, rich and layered, with tiers of blackberry, wild berry, black licorice and mocha flavors. Impressive for its suppleness, yet this has a firm backbone as well, flexing its tannins on the finish. Best from 2013 through 2023." Wine Spectator 92 Points

As always, Shea has selected the best barrels in the cellar to create Homer. This Homer is a blend of 56% Wädenswil and 44% Dijon 777. Dark, opulent and ripe, this wine offers aromas of spice that hint at the velvety blackberry, plum and black cherry flavors that explode on the pallet. It all ends in a long, long finish.
