Alma Negra
Ernesto Catena, the owner of Ernesto Catena Vineyards in Argentina, is the eldest son of Nicolás Catena of Catena Zapata. Ernesto is a world traveler and polymath, with degrees in Computer Science/Economics, Design, and History from Buenos Aires, Milan and London. He is a legendary Bohemian, renowned for his insatiable curiosity and passionate devotion to the arts of writing, painting, photography, horsemanship, polo and archery. It is not surprising that his wines are profoundly expressive, or that he would choose to name a winery 'Alma Negra' (Dark Soul).

While president of Bodegas Escorihuela, Ernesto felt the need to produce wines that would reflect his basic beliefs: high quality, a different style from the majority of wines being made at the time, smaller volumes and a strong brand concept. In 2002, Ernesto Catena Vineyards was created to express those beliefs.

The grapes are crushed at Catena Zapata and Escorihuela. Bernardo Bossi is winemaker, and he also works at Catena Zapata, on chief winemaker Alejandro Vigil's team.

Alma Negra Misterio 2008
The wine is dense, dark, and rich with an intriguing untamed wildness that is an expression of Ernesto’s character as much as it is the result of organic viticulture and a pristine natural environment. Full of flavour and perfectly ready to drink now (especially the Argentine way with smokey grilled beef or lamb). Ripe fruit and plum aromas give way to a concentrated palate full of dark fruit and spice. The elegant texture makes this wine even more luxurious and the red and blue berryfruit continue well into the lengthy finish.

Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar 92 Points
"Good bright ruby-red. Crushed blackberry, musky dark chocolate and flinty minerality on the nose. Dry and minerally, with urgent blackberry fruit lifted by a strong violet quality. Finishes broad, subtle and long, with dusty, toothcoating tannins, a saline nuance and lingering notes of blackberry and licorice. A very successful blend."

Wine Advocate 91 Points
"The 2008 Misterio is a blend of Bonarda, Malbec, and Petit Verdot aged in barrique for 12 months. It displays more complexity than the Blend cuvee in its bouquet of wood smoke, Asian spices, violets, plum, and blackberry. Medium-bodied on the palate, with a sense of elegance in the glass, this nicely proportioned effort has the structure to evolve for 1-2 years and will provide pleasure through 2020. Alma Negra is owned by Ernesto Catena and the wines are made by Gustavo Marin and Jose Reginato."
