Tenuta di Bibbiano Tenuta di Bibbiano is in an area where grapevines have been grown since the 11th century, as documented in a notarial deed which in September 1089 ratified the donation by Mingarda di Morando of the “curte” and the “castello de Bibiune, cum ecclesia, cum casis, (…) viteis” to Giovanni di Benzo. The development of wine-growing in the historical Chianti area adjacent to the Val d'Elsa dates back to the late Middle Ages and grew rapidly thanks to the new techniques which reached Tuscany from northern Europe through the Francigena Road and one of its important branches running through the Tenuta.
The Marzi Marrocchesi family, owner of the Tenuta since 1865, has proceeded in the footsteps of history, continuing wine growing with passion and turning it into an entrepreneurial tradition handed down from father to son. The present owners, Tommaso and Federico, and in the recent past their parents Alfredo and Marzia, have committed themselves to keeping this tradition alive thanks to classic growing methods combined with modern technology.
The family policy is focused in obtaining high-quality classic Chianti wines thanks to a firm choice to privilege quality over quantity. This is accomplished in a first stage by thinning the grapes on the vine; in a second stage, by carefully selecting the grapes during the harvest, still carried out by hand.
The vineyards started by Pier Tommaso Marzi and his son-in-law Alfredo Marrocchesi between 1950 and 1970, with the help of Giulio Gambelli, Dr Vagaggini and Professor Trabalzini, have been expanded with those recently grown by Tommaso and Federico.
Under the expert guidance of Giulio Gambelli, who started his profession in the world of Chianti in 1942 at Bibbiano, and the professional competence of Stefano Porcinai, the new vineyards are characterised by a cépage of approximately 5000 vines per hectare, a sixth of which is very short.
The vineyards cover a total area of approximately 25 hectares at an altitude of 270 to 300 metres on sloping hills which, thanks to their favourable position and exposure to the sun, have excellent micro-climatic conditions. The vineyards have Sangiovese and Sangiovese Grosso grapes and a smaller number of Merlot and Colorino vines, the leaves of which in autumn turn to the typical wine colour.
