Chateau de Saint Cosme
Saint Cosme - located north to the village of Gigondas - is the most ancient estate in the region. Lying on the site of a Gallo-Roman villa which very probably already had its own vineyard, the estate’s existence in 1416 is attested by a document mentioning the granting by Jean de Chalon, Price of Orange, of “land for the planting of vines on the Saint Cosme slopes.” The Barruol’s ancestors acquired it in 1570, and at the end of the sixteenth century built a splendid residence over existing cellars. In 1992, it was Louis Barruol, representing the 14th generation, who continued the family business by taking over the 15 hectares of vineyards from his father.

‘We have 15 ha of old vines (average 60 years old) with a yield of around 27hos/ha. It was with the “savoir-faire” of a vigneron we created in 1997 a negociant activity that one could call a “Negociant-Vigneron”. My wish was to become a negociant which would work with the spirit of a vigneron using ancient methods. This was meaning: being and remaining a small producer, be followed by winemakers having the same ambition, transport my wines in casks to avoid to rack them and kill their fruit.’ Louis Barroul, a fanatical and uncompromising individual who extracts from the land the true essence of the grape and is driven to make nothing but top-notch wines. Louis is a hands-on type of winemaker, and even with the grapes he contracts for, he personally oversees the thinning, pruning, ripening and harvesting. This dedication and surveillance pays off in spades in the end with wines that are focused and concentrated without being flabby. They showcase an array of balanced fruit, spice and earth flavors.

Saint Cosme Cote Rotie 2009
Huge Discount off the Release Price of $75. Lowest Price Anywhere!
Wine Spectator 93 Points:

"Rich and dense, but velvety and nicely detailed, with sleek-edged cassis, blackberry and plum fruit woven with white pepper, mulled spice and dark olive notes. A strong, tangy, iron edge takes over on the finish, with lots of latent grip. Best from 2013 through 2022. Only 900 Cases Produced."

Wine Advocate 92 Points: "As for the negociant northern Rhone selections, the dense purple-hued 2009 Cote Rotie reveals lots of black olive, bacon fat, black raspberry and blackberry fruit notes intertwined with hints of charcoal and underbrush. This impressively endowed, medium to full-bodied Cote Rotie should drink well for 10-15 years."

International Wine Cellar 92 Points: "Bright purple. Classic syrah aromas of cherry, boysenberry and violet, complicated by smoked meat, pipe tobacco and licorice. Vibrant and sweet, showing impressive depth to its dark fruit preserve, anise and floral flavors. Tangy acidity and silky tannins give lift and shape to the long, floral finish."
