Hahn Estate
Along California’s central coast lies the renowned Monterey County appellation and within that, the Santa Lucia Highlands, home to the Hahn Family’s vineyard estate. Nicolaus (“Nicky”) Hahn and his wife Gaby discovered a love for California wines in the mid-1970's. A two-year search led them to the breathtaking beauty and ideal growing conditions of Monterey County where they subsequently purchased two ranches on which to plant vineyards and start a winery.

In 1991, Nicky Hahn created the Hahn Estates brand to showcase supple and accessible wines from the family's Monterey County vineyards. The Hahn wines are produced from five vineyards located in the Santa Lucia Highlands and Monterey County appellations. This region boasts the most varied climatic conditions of any region in California.

The wind and fog interact with solar radiation to slow grapes' ripening, producing up to two months longer growing season than in warmer grape growing regions. These conditions create fruit with more varietal intensity, flavor, depth and structure, and thus, exceptional wines. In German, “Hahn” means “Rooster” and for this reason a rooster embellishes the Hahn Estates label, honoring the Hahn Family’s European Heritage.

“The Hahn SLH (Santa Lucia Highland) wines encompass what I believe is the 'soul' of not only the soil and climate, but also of the Hahn team,” according to Winemaker Paul Clifton. “If it were not for the Hahn family having the dedication and passion to purchase and plant this land, these wines would not exist. This is an obvious statement, but an important one. Within that statement, the Hahns have surrounded themselves with a team of people all passionate towards one goal: producing a line of SLH wines of world class quality. Blended in to each of these wines is this team’s signature of passion. When a wine drinker pops the cork and tastes the wine, buried underneath the layers of aromas and flavors is a subliminal sense of the many souls involved in growing and making these wines.”

The Santa Lucia Highlands appellation is filled with ancient, glacial alluvial soils and enjoys consistent coastal fog and breezes that create an ideal climate for cooler-weather thriving wine varietals. The elevated location of this appellation allows the vines to take full advantage of the morning sunshine before the afternoon maritime breezes gently cool the vineyards. This climatic combination creates an especially long growing season, allowing the grapes to fully develop and attain maximum varietal potential. With the land that Hahn farms in mind, Winemaker Paul Clifton states, “It is easy to get passive and only observe what is growing above the ground, forming assumptions on why a grapevine is growing too vigorous, or not vigorous enough… the vegetative growth above the soil is a mirror reflection of the roots within the soil. Basically, you plant to the right varietals, you farm it with passion, and you pay attention to Mother Nature and you’ll be rewarded with an outstanding grape.”

Don't forget about these well crafted and great value wines by Hahn

Hahn Winery Pinot Noir 2012
For Hahn’s Pinot Noir growing in the Arroyo Seco AVA, the predominant source of this wine, conditions were ideal for producing rounded and fruit forward wines. A dash of around 8% of Pinot Noir from our estate vineyards in the Santa Lucia Highlands contributed a note of acidity and elegance to the final blend.
Dark purple in the glass, this Pinot Noir shows aromas of dried plums, black currants and cola. On the palate, black cherry flavors and a silky mouth-feel build on fresh acidity and well integrated oak flavors of vanilla and spice.

Hahn Winery Cabernet Sauvignon 2012
Aromatic and concentrated, this Cabernet bursts out of the glass with aromas of black cherries and dried black currants complemented by notes of espresso and sweet oak. On the palate flavors combining dark chocolate and blueberries are framed by drying tannins, leading to a clean finish with hints of caramelized plums and spice. The plush tannins and strong dark fruit flavors of this wine make it a perfect complement to marinated skirt steak with grilled onions, or teriyaki chicken skewers.

Hahn Winery Chardonnay Monterey 2012
Sourced from Hahn’s vineyards in the Santa Lucia Highlands and Arroyo Seco appellations of Monterey County. This wine’s aroma shows green apple, ripe pear, and caramel. Medium bodied on the palate with flavors of lemon sorbet, white peach and pineapple coming to the fore with a hint of vanilla on the finish.

Hahn Winery Merlot Central Coast 2011
Dark purple and full of flavor, this fragrant Merlot showcases sweet raspberry aromas backed by wisps of black pepper. A taste reveals a round, well bodied red wine with darker flavors of cassis and chocolate framed by medium tannins and a soft touch of acidity. A slight dryness and a hint of vanilla support this wines long finish. Try this wine with rosemary grilled pork tenderloin or grilled radicchio wedges brushed with olive oil.
