When Robert Mondavi chose the To Kalon Vineyard as the home for his new winery in 1966 he remarked that “It was a vineyard with a distinguished history and a magical nature. Ideal soils, sunlight, and rain—to my eye, the vineyard was a treasure.” Those sentiments were re-confirmed when the To Kalon Vineyard was named the Vineyard of the Year by the California State Farm Bureau in 2011. The To Kalon Vineyard lies on prime benchland in west Oakville. The low fertility, well-drained soils combined with optimal sun exposure yield rich, complex flavors and impeccable fruit maturity.

Robert Mondavi

With its legacy of more than 40 years of fine winemaking, the Robert Mondavi Winery is a shining symbol of Napa Valley.

Robert Mondavi believed that the path to a more gracious lifestyle leads through the appreciation of wine, food, and art. He believed that Napa Valley could be the center for that lifestyle, producing wines that belonged in the company of the great wines of the world, and wines that belonged at the family table.

Raised in a traditional Italian family, Robert Mondavi understood that sharing good wine and good food with family and friends is one of life’s great pleasures. He saw the potential of then unrecognized Napa Valley to be a pre-eminent winegrowing region and cultural hub for his vision.

In 1966, Robert G. Mondavi founded the Robert Mondavi Winery to create wines in California that belong in the company of the world's finest. The winery has embodied the Robert Mondavi family's commitment to excellence, innovation and the production of distinctive wines that define the very best of Napa Valley.

With the release of the Robert Mondavi Winery’s Cabernet Sauvignon in the late 60’s the world’s eyes were opened to the potential of the Napa Valley. The historic Paris tasting in 1976, where two former winemakers of the Robert Mondavi Winery won first prize, further supported this revelation.

Robert Mondavi’s commitment to the industry and to promoting wine as part of a gracious lifestyle led to his "mission tour" in the late 1980s. He crossed the country, educating restaurateurs, media and most of all consumers on wine’s integral role in culture and civilization.

Through tireless winemaking innovation, an uncompromising eye for quality and unshakable faith in California’s vineyards, Robert Mondavi realized his vision of creating a collection of the most recognized and best-loved wines in the world. More importantly, he realized his vision of Napa Valley as the center of the worldwide wine and food culture that has enriched the lives of millions.

The first major winery built in Napa Valley in the post-Prohibition era, Robert Mondavi Winery helped establis h the foundation for the modern-day California wine business. Its mission-style architecture, with the expansive archway and bell tower designed by Cliff May, has become an enduring landmark that evokes California's winemaking history.

The Robert Mondavi Winery is recognized nationally and internationally as a leader in the wine industry. From the introduction of cold fermentation in stainless steel tanks and the use of French oak barrels in the late 1960's, to collaboration with NASA using aerial imaging to understand the health and vigor of the vines in the 1990's, the Robert Mondavi Winery has always been at the forefront of wine industry technology. Their innovations, such as gentle winemaking techniques to increase wine quality and natural farming to protect people and the environment, have led to fundamental changes in the industry's approach to winegrowing.

Robert Mondavi Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2009

Robert Mondavi Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon

Stephen Tanzer International Wine Cellar 94 Points:
"Saturated red-ruby. Currant, graphite, wild herbs, cedar and sexy oak on the nose, lifted by a floral topnote. A broad and very elegant midweight (I would not have guessed that it was carrying 15.2% alcohol), with lively cassis and floral flavors burnished by mellow oak tones. Lovely fine-grained, long cabernet with excellent lift. Winemaker Janssens notes that Mondavi will have replantedhalf of their To Kalon vines over the 2005-2015 period, but they have kept their oldest sauvignon blanc vines, which date back to the 1940s."

Antonio Galloni/ Vinous 94 Points:
"Mondavi’s 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is sumptuous and beautiful. Plums, mocha, cloves and pencil shavings are all woven together in this gorgeous, large-scaled Cabernet Sauvignon. All the elements are in the right place. Silky, nuanced tannins frame the voluptuous, caressing finish. A wine of centeredness and gorgeous precision, the 2009 is a true standout. The tannins need a few years to soften, but once that starts to happen, the 2009 should enjoy a long life. The blend is 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2029."

Decanter 93 Points:
"Intense essence of summer and autumn fruit on the nose with black cherry in there as well. Great acidity and lovely round tannins. Wonderful, silky mouthfeel, with sweet, supple, ripe fruit that’s not cloying or overdone. Top shelf. "

Wine Spectator 92 Points:
"Pure, rich and layered, with tiers of blackberry, wild berry, black licorice and mocha flavors. Impressive for its suppleness, yet this has a firm backbone as well, flexing its tannins on the finish. Best from 2013 through 2023."
