There's nothing like tasting an incredible red wine that has aged so gracefully and comes with a great price tag and a story you don’t hear everyday. Established in 1870, Bodegas Urbina is one of the oldest wineries in Rioja and is currently under its 4th generation of family ownership. Most of our Spanish wine lovers will notice this wine comes with a “Crianza” designation from Rioja, which means that the wine was aged in oak for a year, in this case in French and American oak, and then aged in bottle for at least a year. You might then wonder how we are able to offer a wine of this category from the year 2000? Well, the winemaking team at Bodegas Urbina believes in releasing their best wines (seleccion) after many years, in this case nearly two decades, because they know the beauty of true Rioja; they are truly masters of cellaring and properly aging the wines until they are in a perfect drinking window. Take it a step further, Bodegas Urbina is considered by many wine afficionados to be the “Burgundy of Rioja.” With their very small vineyard of 75 hectares in one of the coolest and most remote parts of Rioja, the extraordinary grapes create a wine with excellent structure, finesse and acidity- built for aging. The wine has a beautifully deep ruby color with a touch of garnet on the rim and the nose pops with the classic Rioja notes we love, from brilliant oak treatment, to delicious plum sauce, dried cherry, candied rose, tobacco, and then some sweet spices. It is now in the perfect window for drinking and should provide optimal drinking pleasure for the next five years.
